Gothic 1 Remake – Best mods to survive the Colony

Let’s be honest, like the original, the Gothic 1 Remake can be a rather obtuse game, and some of its more uncompromising features may put some players off from finishing the adventure. The good news is that Gothic mods on PC can help make the experience more tailored to the player’s preferences.

The game makes some awkward decisions, and not everything the Gothic remake does works well in 2026. Mods can resolve this and make the game easier. Below, we’ll list some of the best mods we’ve come across for Gothic, as every single one of them improves the game and makes it more fun, at least in our view.

    Lockpick Settings

Let’s face it, lockpicking is the worst part of Gothic and the Gothic Remake. The mini-game was a slog in the original game, and all the remake does is remind us of this. We understand that it’s trying to be a faithful remake, but lockpicking was really something we hoped would be less painful the second time around.

Fortunately, there’s a mod for that. The Lockpick Settings mod means players can adjust this minigame to make it less tedious by adding next move hints, displaying connections, and more. This means you won’t waste quite as much time, but can still engage in the activity as the game intended.

However, the mod also lets you skip lockpicking entirely and automatically opens them all. This risks making the game way too easy and changes the face of some quests completely. But if you really can’t stand lockpicking, then we won’t tell anyone.

    Put Away Torch

You know how games like Tomb Raider just let you fire up a torch and put it away when you no longer need it? Gothic does the opposite. If you’re done with a torch, you need to drop it on the ground and use another if you need it. There’s no simply blowing it out and putting it away until next time – which is bizarre and annoying.

The Put Away Torch mod fixes this and finally lets you re-use torches and store them safely in your inventory when you’re not using them. It’s something we feel like the Gothic remake should have added, so if this feature is causing you irritation, download this mod and worry in the dark no-longer.

    Highlight All Nearby Items

Some games offer slight hints about where items are or offer mechanics to help you track them in the overworld. But in the Gothic remake, every item just sort of blends into the textures and doesn’t really stick out. Now, this could mean that players really need to search hard to find goodies, which is rewarding, but it also means you’re bound to miss plenty of things that could make your life easier.

The Highlight All Nearby Items lets you scan areas and know where to search for useful items that are just lying around. It’s game-changing, as in Gothic, something as simple as a new sword can completely transform your experience and how you approach quests and the various other events that occur. So, if you want to give yourself the best chance of success in the Colony, this mod is a must.

    Rich Merchants More Ore

There’s nothing more annoying in Gothic than when a merchant you’re offloading loot to runs out of Ore. It then takes a while for them to replenish, and means you’re stuck lumbering around with unwanted gear, or forced to travel to a new trader to make some precious Ore. It can also be frustrating when you need to stock up on items like arrows, but the trader only has a measly number to sell.

This mod makes merchants rich and makes it way harder for them to run out of money, meaning you can sell to them until your heart’s content, rather than needing to huff it all the way to a different one for the same frustrating thing. The mod also makes sure merchants are well-stocked with items like arrows and bolts, meaning you don’t need to endlessly worry about running out if you’re running a dexterity build.

    World Map with Markers

As we established in our map guide, the world map in the Gothic 1 Remake is almost useless. Sure, it tells you where the camps are and what the Old Camp looks like from a bird’s eye view, but once you know your way around the Colony, it becomes pointless. There’s no tracking where NPCs hang out or markers to clarify what is where.

So, thank the heavens for this mod, which creates a world map complete with markers for NPCs, Locations, Caves and much more, all helpfully color-coded, too. If you want a world map that feels a bit more like one you’d find in Skyrim, then this is mod to use.

Custom Level Rewards and Movement Speed

You start out life in Gothic with very little power or combat ability, and to be fair, Gothic is more of a prison drama than an action game. It’s an experience that rewards guile and encourages players to build relationships with NPCs to solve the various mysteries. But then again, it’s also an adventure RPG, and it’s nice to be able to hack and slash monsters and bandits to death when the need arises.

So this mod lets you completely customize your character’s progression. You can add extra Learning Points, extra Health, extra Mana, or even free Strength and Dexterity every time you level up. It also includes a custom speed modifier to let you move around the colony faster – which is very, very welcome.
