“What kind of cop are you?” is the slogan of Disco Elysium. It shows the game is not just about solving the case; it’s about discovering the thoughts that resonate with you as a player.
Thoughts in Disco Elysium are similar to what Charms do in other RPGs. They offer unique and additional buffs and debuffs, in some cases. Choosing thoughts that complement your build and stats can make your detective more effective and versatile.
Since you can have a limited number of thoughts active, it is best to choose the ones that serve to build the best. If you’re unsure where to start, check out our guide to the best starting builds in Disco Elysium.
Here are the best thoughts from Disco Elysium to internalize for a richer, easier experience.
9 – Kingdom of Conscience

The logical mind says that nothing is in the right place in Revachol. People cling to their ideologies, which cause society to crumble and the city to be in turmoil. Choosing a path in Disco Elysium where you don’t take sides and stay neutral will unlock the Kingdom of Conscience thought.
If your build is focused on Motorics or Physique, this thought can be a lifesaver. After internalizing is finished, the learning cap for Volition and Logic will be raised to 5. In the middle section of the game and afterward, using Logic becomes important to piece together the evidence.
So use this thought to be prepared if you think your cap for Volition and Logic is low. Also, choosing Moralist dialogue options after activating this thought will heal +1 Morale.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| -2 Half LIght | – Learning cap for Volition raised to 5 – Learning cap for Logic raised to 5 – Moralist dialogue options heal +1 Morale | 1h 25m | Choose neutral/moderate dialogue options |
8 – Rigorous Self-Critique

One of the things that makes Disco Elysium so striking is the raw freedom it gives you. Self-sabotage and self-criticism aren’t just allowed; they can even become defining traits. Rigorous Self-Critique is the thought that knocks and says, “You need to acknowledge your mistakes and take responsibility.”
It’s a challenging task, which is why it takes six in-game hours to internalize. But apologizing can lift a weight off your shoulders, and that’s exactly what this thought does. Every failure on Motorics and Physique Red Checks restores +1 Health, while every failure on Intellect and Physique Red Checks restores +1 Morale.
Additionally, the Pain Threshold learning cap increases to 6. In Disco Elysium, anything—physical or moral—can hurt you if you’re not careful. A single misstep can have lasting consequences, but with this thought, those consequences happen far less often. To unlock it, simply apologize whenever you get the chance.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| -1 Authority | – FYS and MOT Red Check failures heal +1 Health – INT and PSY Red Check failures heal +1 Morale – Learning cap for Pain Threshold raised to 6 | 6 hours | Say sorry and apologize often |
7 – Apricot Chewing Gum Scented One

The world of Disco Elysium is dense and easy to get lost in, but players can’t forget why they were sent to Revachol in the first place: to solve a murder. No matter how many side paths you explore, the investigation is still the core of the journey, and one of the most important skills for that work is Perception, the ability to catch small details others miss.
The game is packed with passive checks you won’t even notice unless the related skill meets a minimum threshold, and Perception is one of the most revealing. You see its value the moment you reach the crime scene and begin examining the body and the surrounding area. If you want a stronger edge for spotting clues early, the Apricot Chewing Gum Scented One is a lifesaver.
To unlock this thought, open the hidden compartment in your clipboard, smell the Ledger’s note, check the Pour L’Homme labourer jeans for the apricot chewing gum wrapper, and then smell it. Scents can trigger memory, and this one reminds the detective of his sharper days. After five in-game hours of internalization, you’re rewarded with +2 Perception. A huge boost for early and mid-game investigation.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| -1 Reaction Speed | +2 Perception | 5h 5m | Smell the Chewing Gum Wrapper when you open the Clipboard’s hidden compartment |
6 – The Bow Collector

In contrast to the previous thought, The Bow Collector is all about getting lost in Revachol itself. Shivers is the skill that lets you listen to the city’s soul, those eerie, poetic moments where you stand still and let the surroundings speak to you.
Shivers often unlocks hidden dialogue, environmental details, and story fragments that stick with you long after the credits roll. They’re the moments you remember when someone brings up Disco Elysium. And because many players don’t invest heavily in this skill, The Bow Collector can help fill that gap.
It takes about six in-game hours to internalize, but the reward,+3 Shivers, is absolutely worth the wait. To unlock the thought, you’ll need to examine your Damaged Ledger once again and pass a passive Conceptualization 6 check. Do that, and the city will start whispering a lot more clearly.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| -1 Authority -1 Hand/Eye Coordination | 3+ Shivers | 6h 10m | Read the note in the Damaged Ledger and pass the passive Conceptualization check |
5 – Indirect Modes of Taxation

Money is scarce in Disco Elysium, and even a few reál can make the difference between buying healing items or grabbing a piece of clothing with solid buffs. Conversations might feel endless, but here’s the twist: you can turn those dialogues into income.
With Indirect Modes of Taxation, every Ultraliberal dialogue option rewards you with +1 Reál. Since politics and economics show up in almost every conversation, this thought can quietly turn you into one of Revachol’s wealthiest cops. Unlocking it is also tied to money, but it requires you to ignore your Empathy for a while.
To trigger the thought, you need to take bribes. Both Joyce and Evrart will offer them, and you must accept. After that, keep choosing dialogue options that match your capitalist mindset. Do this enough, and a thought orb will appear to let you internalize it.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| -2 Empathy | -1 Empathy – Ultraliberal dialogue options give +1 reál | 1h 45m | Take bribes from Joyce and Evrart and choose capitalist dialogues |
4 – Jamais Vu

Some thoughts are not for learning new things, but to remember what you have forgotten. The lost pieces of memory and personality of the main character appear in the shape of a thought orb. They can range from simple observation to deeper reflection.
With Jamais Vu internalized, for every single orb clicked, you will get +1 XP. Getting this thought as soon as possible will help you level up fast. To get this thought, you must first speak with Lena in Whirling-in-Rags about ‘reality’. Afterward, find Joyce and continue the same conversation until you get this thought.
It will take 3 and a half hours to internalize it, but it doesn’t have any debuffs. On the other hand, this thought adds a +12 bonus point to the Conceptualization check when you speak with Joyce. This conversation will create the path for a successful conversation when you have to interrogate her about the case.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| -None | +1 XP for every orb clicked – All INT learning cap raised by 1 – Gives a +12 bonus to the Conceptualization check with Joyce Messier | 3h 25m | Talk to Lena and Joyce about reality |
3 – Actual Art Degree

Among all the topics you can discuss with NPCs, art comes up more than most. This is your path to unlocking the Actual Art Degree thought. A thought orb will appear, asking, “Why does art inspire you so much?” That’s your cue to start internalizing it.
Unlike Rigorous Self-Critique, this thought only takes 1 hour and 30 minutes of in-game time. Once internalized, all passive Conceptualization checks restore +1 Morale, as if observing fine art cleanses your soul. You also gain an extra +10 XP from each passive check.
The only downside is a debuff to Hand/Eye Coordination. It’s best to internalize this thought after handling the corpse, since you’ll need that skill to manage certain tasks. Also, make sure to de-internalize it before the Tribunal at the end of the game, for the same reason.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| -1 Perception | – Conceptualization passives heal +1 Morale and give +10 XP -1 Hand/Eye Coordination | 1h 30m | Choose art-related dialogues |
2 – The Precarious World

Disco Elysium doesn’t rely on action set pieces to get your adrenaline going—it has something far more unique: White Checks. During conversations, you’ll regularly hit moments where a specific skill level is required to push the story forward. If you fail the check, that option stays locked until you level up the related skill.
This becomes a serious problem later in the game, when leveling up gets much harder. That’s where The Precarious World comes in. Once internalized, it lowers the success and failure thresholds of all Critical Checks by 1. It’s an incredibly useful thought that benefits almost any build.
The best strategy is to unlock it as early as possible by passing the White Shivers check when you meet the Dice Maker. After you start processing the thought, every Red Check will automatically fail, no matter your skill level. That might sound harsh, but it gives you more opportunities to earn XP, level up, and retry those checks with better odds thanks to the lowered thresholds.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| All Red Checks fail | Critical success and failure threshold lowered by 1 | 4 hours | Pass the White Shivers check with Dice Maker |
1 – Wompty-Dompty Dom Centre

Leveling up in the final third of Disco Elysium can be a real challenge, especially when white-checks block your progress. That’s why Wompty-Dompty Dom Centre is such an important thought to internalize, particularly for builds that focus on Encyclopedia.
You can gain this thought in just 42 minutes of in-game time, and its buff makes the wait more than worthwhile. Once internalized, every passive Encyclopedia check grants +10 XP and +2 Real. Activating this thought early can easily net you one or two extra level-up points.
The only real hurdle is the waiting. To unlock it, you need to speak with Trant Heidelstam about the Feld building and tape computers, which will create a thought orb leading to this thought. However, Trant can only be found on the boardwalk, accessible after Day 3 in the game.
| Research Effect | Completion Reward | Required Time | How to Unlock |
| -1 Suggestion | -2 Suggestion Encyclopedia passives give +10 XP and +2 reál | 42 minutes | Speak with Trant Heidelstam about the Feld building and tape computers |
