Changing the spoken language is usually a simple thing in a video game, but Beast of Reincarnation makes it unnecessarily confusing, and if you’re anything like us, you may have trawled through the options menu to find this setting, only to come up empty-handed.
Adding to the confusion, most of the trailers and reviews for Beast of Reincarnation distinctly show the characters talking to each other in English, but for some players, when the game begins, Emma and her crew are all speaking Japanese. And the option to change it is nowhere in sight.
This may lead players to assume the game’s only spoken language is Japanese, or that the English dub isn’t available in their version of the game. But fear not, those who dislike subtitles; the option does exist – you just probably missed it in your haste to get into the action. Here’s how to change the spoken language settings in Beast of Reincarnation.
How to change the spoken language
To change the spoken language in Beast of Reincarnation, you’ll need to exit the game and return to the main menu. Only then can you change the Voice-Over language between English and Japanese.
Essentially, the game can’t be running gameplay and accommodate this change, so it needs to be done on the main menu so the software can calibrate and alter the dialogue and cutscenes. The truth is that Beast of Reincarnation comes with the Japanese language set to default, so those who want it changed to English will need to make this change manually.
In our playthrough of the game, we found that the English dub wasn’t particularly brilliant. Characters often felt a little bit stiff and spent way too much time rambling on about food. However, there are advantages to playing the game in the language you’re most familiar with.
Beast of Reincarnation features a lot of dialogue, and a huge amount of it is delivered during gameplay while you’re in the thick of the action. It’s a lot easier to take in this dialogue, be it vital mission instructions or world-building, when you can simply listen to it. It’s much harder to read subtitles and take in what it says when you’re locked in a furious boss battle where survival relies on you being able to perform a perfect parry.
I originally tried playing with the Japanese language, preferring it to the English dub, but I won’t deny that the game became far more accessible and immersive once I made the change. It also helps you keep track of who’s talking, as the game has various characters, who all may be contacting you at different times.
