Sony Q&A Tries, and Fails, to Soften Physical Media Blow

It’s all been outages and bad news, and Sony seems to want to keep the bad news train going. Following its disavowing of physical media, there’s been a flurry of players tired of everything going digital; despite what the high-ups of many gaming companies seem to be pushing towards, there’s even a return to physical media not just in the gaming space.

Today, Sony made its first official statement on the decision, but there’s no good news. The company will still discontinue disc manufacturing starting January 2028, making sure that everyone will have to have only digital media and obviously giving a monopoly to Sony’s Play Store. The backlash of this decision made the number of comments by dedicated gamers flood social media in every corner to voice discontent, and the announcement post carried much more engagement than the debut trailer of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The amount of backlash shows how much people are not pleased with the way the gaming industry is going, as gamers’ wants and executive decisions sit diametrically opposite, and after all is said and done, the latter somehow wonders how come they’re the bad guys.

    Sony Speaks, But Doesn’t Listen

CFO Lin Tao finally addressed the controversial Sony stance during a Q&A session within Sony’s Q1 2026 financial earnings report. She stated that instead of pushing back, finding a middle ground, or throwing the plan away altogether, Sony will stick to its decision, as executives have discussed it behind closed doors and it will continue to grow into an all-digital gaming system.

Moving on with the controversial stance, Lin Tao continued by saying that Sony had given the gaming community a fair enough warning and plenty of time in advance to prepare for the sudden shift, as they will be following broader inevitable industry trends, as if Sony isn’t the trend setter and is merely a follower, but I digress.

The statement comes after an ironic outage that took out the PlayStation Network and continues to showcase that even if we were historically close to an all-digital utopia, now is not the time, and suits still need to listen to the needs of the market.
