PlayStation Fails Digital-Only Test as PSN Outage Continues

Players have been taken aback by Sony’s digital-only decision moving forward, and in a funny twist of fate, Sony’s PSN has been down for over four hours now.

All of a sudden, we’re left without a means of playing our games in the PSN library or accessing the PlayStation Network, which Sony has proudly proclaimed as central to a future where physical games are no longer needed. Well, if Sony could see the irony instead of greed, maybe they would’ve also done a chuckle and reversed their decision, but we live in bitter reality instead with a non-working connection.

As of the time of writing, there is little movement on the PSN, thanks to an Amazon Web Services issue. Players are being met with error messages when they get through, and most are still failing to connect to the PlayStation Network altogether.

What is Sony Saying About the Outage?

Sony’s online service page has finally updated itself recently to say that “all services are experiencing issues” and that they’re “working to resolve things as soon as possible”. We don’t have any estimates of times to report other than the pat on the back to wait. Originally, Sony didn’t even do a statement on the issue or the hiccups before addressing it hours later. The Sony page was issuing “all services are up and running” until very recently, so they seem to be understanding of the issue now.

Allegedly, the crisis kicked off with Amazon Web Services as the likeliest to be the culprit, as three hours ago they were the first to issue a statement saying that they were doing recovery at the time and will continue doing so, without highlighting what had actually gone wrong in the service. It started off with a hiccup in the services, which then spread to the worldwide issue we have in PSN today.

This whole issue wouldn’t be so critical if we didn’t have players in a virtual fight over PlayStation’s statement on removing digital media altogether to form a monopoly of game pricing starting in 2028. There is nothing too unusual about servers crashing every blue moon, but the comedic timing sure seems handy for the gamers.

As for the outage, now it’s a matter of waiting and enjoying media that we have at hand, which Sony is threatening to leave us without.
