PlayStation Store Takes Action Against ‘Slop’, Low-Quality Games

Many video game titles are being removed from the Playstation storefront to counter the “Slop” or “Spam” games. This is nothing new to the video game platforms available in the modern market, as it becomes easier to submit games by almost anyone, many developers push out lackluster products off the shelves in the hope of selling a few copies.

You have probably encountered many of the spam games on various gaming platforms. In particular, games from developer RandomSpin is what the PS Store looks to have gone after. Supermarket Simulator Pro, Bodycam Shooter, The Glory of America, Knight Shooter, are now no longer available on the platform. Most of these were seen by users as low-effort cash grabs with easy platinum trophies.

The whole debacle came to the mainstream spotlight when many devs pointed out the problems with the storefronts in an IGN interview. Many developers pointed out the poor state of the PlayStation Store compared to Xbox. One of the interview’s highlights was the easier acceptance on Sony’s Storefront for a lot of such games.

Many said it is far too easy to submit a slop quality game on The PlayStation store, by stating:

“I was also told that while Nintendo and Xbox review all changes to store pages before they’re allowed to go live, PlayStation just does one check near launch to confirm everything looks okay.”

The problem of slop games does not only revolve around Sony Playstation, many devs have faced the same problem encountered on Valve’s Steam. One of the devs said about Valve’s handling of similar low quality/Spam games:

“You can quite literally submit the store page as one game, get Valve approval, then change everything, and then put it live”

Another major problem with the Playstation Slop Games is the amount of AI content embedded in the game. Recently, Supermarket Simulator on Steam caught a lot of fire from using AI gen art on its cover. With AI being at the forefront of the technical revolution, it has become easier for many devs to create low-effort products in a small timeframe.

We saw the PlayStation hasn’t officially addressed the Slop claims by the devs and consumers. But this week we are seeing Sony cleaning the Playstation store of all low-quality games to make the storefront a bit more friendly to browse.
