Subnautica 2 – All Leviathans & Their Locations

If you’ve played either the original Subnautica or Subnautica: Below Zero, the chances are you already know what a Leviathan is. It’s also likely you’ve had to flee as fast as you can, or simply accept your fate. If you’re new to the series, let me give you a brief overview of the games’ most terrifying creatures. Leviathans are giant sea creatures that want to eat you, rip you apart, or, if you’re lucky, make you simply need fresh pants.

So, now we’ve established that they are deep-sea killing machines hell-bent on destroying you, let’s show you where to find Leviathans so you can go say hi. Oh, and if you’re feeling extra friendly, there’s some good news. There are four of these introverted aquatic beasts for you to pay a visit to, each of them as deliciously violent and deadly as the last.

Where to Find the Collector Leviathan

If you’re not overly focused on exploring Subnautica 2’s beautiful seas at your own pace, and have gone about following the path set out for you by the game, the Collector Leviathan is usually the first of these monstrosities to ruin your day.

The Collector Leviathan is essentially a massive octopus that just wants to eat you. He literally did eat me; it was rather inconvenient to say the least. But before you become sushi for a giant octopus, you’ll probably want to know where to find this massive beast.

For those of you with short attention spans, head to -263372, 459189, -18222. Annoyingly, this is also the place that I thought would be a great location to build a base, until I found this giant octopus lodger hanging around.

How to Get to the Collector Leviathan

Right, now the ADHD-riddled speed demons have gone, let me give you a few tips on where to find the Collector Leviathan without getting lost, killed, or burnt to a crisp. The first thing you want to do is head back to the lifepod and look directly to the east. Keep going until you get a warning that the water temperature is too hot, back up a little, and don’t go back into that area.

If you see fire, multiple warnings, and your character screaming in excruciating pain, while on fire in a literal sea of water, you’ve gone a touch too far. Head back to cooler water, take a second, and start heading either south or north in order to go around the flaming pit of doom.

Keep following the edge of the flaming pools of death until you reach a large ledge. I went south and found the ledge at -281933, 465444, -18222 where the water finally seemed less deadly. For a couple of minutes at least. Keep heading east, and before long, you’ll hear the deadly noise of the Collector Leviathan coming to wreck your day. If you don’t find the Leviathan straight away, check your coordinates and get as close to -263372, 459189, -18222. It shouldn’t take long before you find it, or it finds you.

Where to Find the World Tree

Remember when you first launched the game and got that Subnautica 2 intro scene with the massive tree in the background. So, yeah. It’s not a tree. This one might be a little shorter and less detailed than the last, I’m afraid.

To get to the World Tree Leviathan. Poke your head out of the water, look for the obnoxiously large tree poking out of the water. There it is, you found it; good job.

As it stands, with Subnautica 2 still being in early access, there’s not actually a legitimate way to get to the World Tree. I won’t give away any spoilers, but it does seem that the world tree is going to be an important part of the game, with several scans of the World Tree and parts of the game’s lore and story hinting at the massive object being an important titan-class Leviathan.

But for now, yeah, that’s it, there’s a giant tree, it’s currently not a danger, and it’s much less impressive or interesting than the other Leviathans in the game.

Where to Find the Deepwing Brooder

So far, it would seem that the Deepwing Brooder doesn’t hang around in one location on the map; it prefers to roam. This might sound like it would make it easier to find one, but with the map being as big as it is already, no, they’re not always so easy to find.

They drop Deepwing Egg Clumps down to the seabed, which can be eaten as an extremely satiating food. However, they also drop decoy eggs, which are used to stop predators from taking the real ones.

Unlike pretty much everything else on this list (with the exception of a giant tree), the Deepwing Brooder appears to be a docile Leviathan, which isn’t actually out to eat you.

Where to Find the Great Jaw

The Great Jaw, also known as Clamthulu, is a giant clam Leviathan that is always found in the same place, which is a pleasant change, especially considering that trying to figure out where to find most Leviathans in Subnautica 2 can be a pain. It doesn’t move, it doesn’t chase you, but it can and will kill you if you’re not careful.

While it’s definitely one of the more creepy Leviathans in the game, it’s only really a danger if you’re not careful when trying to grab some Lithium or scan objects. So far, this thing seems as harmless as a librarian in a bar fight. But much like my local librarian, disturb it, and you’re going to experience a world of pain.

Speaking of scanning objects, the Great Clam Leviathan offers you a chance to gain a new blueprint: the portable oxygen generator. The massive clam apparently also creates lithium, a rare resource in the early game.

The issue is that most of the lithium and the portable oxygen generator are surrounded by tripwire tendons which, when triggered, will make the Gian Clam slowly close down around you, filling with poisonous gas, all while a bunch of its creepy eyes stare at you to watch you die.

Getting to the great clam is fairly easy. It’s only around 100m below water, so you don’t need to figure out how to find any of the Tadpole Vehicles updates; in fact, you don’t really need the Tadpole to make it to the Great Clam Leviathan.
You can find Clamthulu at: -348459, 465944, -10150. This is roughly 350m south of the lifepod and shouldn’t take long to get to.

You came here wondering where to find Leviathans in Subnautica 2, and you probably should have stopped at the Great Clam. The Shiver Leviathan is literal nightmare fuel, and seems to have an impressive ability to just pop up on me when I least expect it. In fact, it’s creatures like this that make me want to stay out of the water in survival and horror games.

In Subnautica games, the void is considered the edge of the map. But, unlike most games, instead of being met by a giant wall stopping you from just walking out of the game, the developers felt it would be a fabulous idea to replace that with a jet-black void filled with creatures that would freak Dwayne Johnson out… and he wrestled a crocodile once (probably).

If you want to find the Shiver Leviathan (and I can’t stress enough that it’s not something you should want to do), you need to head over to the farthest reaches of the map. One area where I have always managed to find them without fail is in the far east of the map. From your lifepod, head east, go through the fires of Mount Doom (I mean the really, really hot water area). Pass angry squidward, aka the Collector Leviathan, and keep going east until there is nowhere else to go. It was nice knowing you, so long.

You might have guessed that I’m not a huge fan of the Shiver Leviathan. These are three big Leviathans riding on an even bigger, angrier Leviathan. Sounds bad, right? Oh, it gets worse. The little guys will break off, try to take your attention, while the big one makes you regret your life choices worse than the aftermath of a night out in Vegas.

Equally Scary Creatures in Subnautica 2

If you’re an adrenaline junky, and these bad boys weren’t enough for you. Don’t worry, there’s plenty more fish in the sea, and they can’t wait to meet you.

    Needler Mango

Unlike the Leviathans, the Needler Mango will just turn up out of the blue (or in it, in this case). These things are extremely aggressive, sharks, armed with uranium oxide-tipped darts. If you see one, my advice is: just keep swimming.

    Marrow Breach

The Marrow Breach is another type of shark, which, given the chance, would love to ruin your day. While I actually find these guys pretty cute, don’t go making the same mistake I did. Apparently, they have enzymes capable of processing human tissue, and after my mistake, the taste of human in their mouths.

Are There Reaper Leviathans in Subnautica 2?

The Reaper Leviathan is one of the most popular Leviathans from the previous Subnautica games. They were the most common Leviathan in Subnautica. But, with Subnautica being set on a different planet, at the moment at least, there are no Reapers in Subnautica 2. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t find a way to add them into the game in a later update.

While the Reaper Leviathan itself isn’t in Subnautica 2, you can place a nice reminder of all the horrendous ways they’ve torn you apart before by placing a Reaper statue in your base. The statue comes free with the game, no matter when or where you bought it.
