You need Magnets for a number of crafts in Starsand Island, and that means you need Magnetite. This is required as part of the later crafter main quests, but it’s not something you can avoid if you want to keep making progress and eventually make higher level crafts.
Unfortunately, the game’s description of Magnetite being in Moonlit Forest by Spiritshade River is somewhat misleading. At the very least, the information is incomplete, and I’ve seen a lot of questions about where to actually get Magnetite being asked. The core of the issue is that you can’t just mine Magnetite. It doesn’t drop from any nodes.
Starsand Island – Finding Uncommon Ore Chunks

So, instead of looking for Magnetite, you want to start by looking for Uncommon Ore Chunks. By this point, you’ll have completed the quest to get and analyze Common Ore Chunks, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to use the Magnetite and craft Magnets without clearing those crafter trials.

Unlike Common Ore Chunks, Uncommon Ore Chunks are found in Soil Mounds. However, you don’t find them in the Soil Mounds at the beginning of Moonlit Forest. This is where the Spiritshade River information becomes useful, as you want to find the Soil Mounds that are in the river’s area. These almost always give you an Uncommon Ore Chunk when you dig them up.
Starsand Island – Getting Magnetite from Ore
When you have some Uncommon Ore Chunks, it’s time to return to your home. If you’ve reached the point where you’re getting quests to get or craft items that use Magnetite, then you’ve already done the quest that makes you craft an Ore Analyzer and use it to get Ancient Parts out of Common Ore Chunks. This means that you won’t have to spend time crafting another one.

Next, you want to interact with the Ore Analyzer and put your Uncommon Ore Chunks inside, then start processing them. Magnetite is one of multiple items that are from processing Uncommon Ore Chunks, but that doesn’t mean you always get some.
It takes a while for this to complete, especially if you have multiple chunks in there. So, you might want to go work on other tasks and come back later to see what you got from the chunks. When you open the analyzer to collect your items, there’s a chance that you’ll have Magnetite in Starsand Island. Otherwise, you have to go back for more Uncommon Ore Chunks.
