The Veilguard is the latest installment in the Dragon Age fantasy RPG game, and you can gather new companions and pick up new quests while traveling around Thedas. You also have to make some decisions that have a significant impact on how your storyline progresses and the endings. The first major decision you will face is during the main story quest A Warden’s Best Friend. Towards the end of the quest, you have to decide which city you will save from the attacking dragons.
This can be a tough choice to make, as saving one will unlock the quest for that city and close the chapter for the other city. If you are having a hard time trying to make a decision, then we can help you out. In this guide we have put up what happens in both scenarios, and whether you should save Minrathous or Treviso in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
What to Do Before Starting A Warden’s Best Friend Quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
A Warden’s Best Friend quest is a point of no return, so complete any pending side and companion quests within Minrathous and Treviso. You can load into a prior save and complete any pending quests before starting the Warden’s Best Friend quest. The only quest types you can ignore are the ones involving killing a champion of the gods.
Since these require a higher level to complete, you can avoid them for the time being and you can pick them up later. But failure to complete other quests within the city you don’t wish to save will result in the quests failing for the rest of your playthrough.
Now, let’s get down to what city you should save from the dragons and the consequences of your choice.
Saving Minrathous
If you go ahead and pick Minrathous to save, you will start the On Blighted Wings side quest. This quest will increase your bond with Neve and lower it for Lucanis. In the process, Lucanis will have a unique Hardened status. You cannot utilize his support skills under this status effect, but his damage abilities will become stronger. There will be a change in his skill tree that will reflect his new status.
Furthermore, he will be absent when you visit the Lighthouse, and he won’t join you for some of the missions later on. This choice will also affect the Antivan Crows faction, where you will lose 250 Faction Favors for them but gain 150 Faction Favors for the Shadow Dragons. Also, the shops within Treviso won’t exist anymore, and your waypoints will be reset. You will also find new dialog options while exploring the destroyed city.
Saving Treviso
This decision will impact Lucanis positively while negatively impacting Neve. You can start the On Deadly Wings side quest if you wish to save Treviso. Meanwhile, the city of Minrathous will be blighted, and you cannot visit the shops within the city anymore. Your waypoints will be reset, but you can still visit the city to get unique dialog options. This option will affect the Shadow Dragons, making you lose 250 Faction Favors, but will help you gain 150 Faction Favors with the Antivan Crows.
Neve will be the one to get the Hardened status effect, and she can no longer use her support skills. But her damage output will drastically increase, and there is a shift in her skill tree. Also, romancing her will be slower, and you cannot find her while visiting the Lighthouse. She will also be unavailable for several missions later on.
Help Minrathous Or Treviso: Which Option Should You Pick?
The decision of whether to help Minrathous or Treviso should be taken depending on which companion works well for you in battle or romance from Lucanis or Neve. Since either one character will receive Hardened, their skills will also change. Depending on who you see a future with, you can side with them and help them in their quest to save one of the two cities.
There are a few other things to keep in mind as well while deciding which city to save. The first thing to note is which faction you wish to favor. You have to pick between the Shadow Dragons or the Antivan Crows and help either one to gain 150 Faction Points. Besides that, you will also lose out on the merchant shop for the faction you don’t help, and the contracts for said faction will also dip. Since all the waypoints within the destroyed city get reset, you need to re-explore and unlock them again. The Antaam and The Venatori will target the city you don’t save and will try to gain power through that.
If you wish to see what happens when you save the city you didn’t pick, you can always go back to your last save and continue the rest of the game. That way, you can explore more options to help you unlock some the Dragon Age: The Veilguard endings, including a secret ending within the game.
