Shattered Space drops six new guns to take care of the vortex enemies coming your way, but the DLC also allows grenade crafting to spice up the combat system. There are different layers to the grenade to Starfield, you will need a special item to craft them, and the game does offer a variety of different grenade types to suit your combat pattern. The guide here lists all the grenade types you can craft and how to unlock and find materials for them.

You can craft Vortex Grenades at the Industrial Workbench once you have completed the ‘What Remains’ quest.

All the grenades are built differently, and you will need their own set of materials to craft them. All the materials required for grenade crafting are available in the DLC area, so you will find everything you need on the planet without venturing to different planets. Here is the list of Vortex grenade types you can craft in Scattered Space.

Achievement Alert: Crafting all five of the grenade types will net you an achievement titled ‘Five of a Kind’.

Note: The Vortex Grenades work only against Vortex-type enemies, if you do try to use it with other enemy types (Aliens, Pirates, Zealots), you might not see any good results after the explosion, one thing is for sure, you will have one less grenade in your inventory.

How To Unlock Vortex Grenades In Starfield

You must complete the initial quests to learn to craft Vortex Grenades.

    • Before you rush to the battlefield, you will need to unlock the Vortex Grenades. The only requirement here is to join the House Va’ruun, to get access to the city of Dazra.
    • The game will not instantly give you access to craft the grenades, you will need to complete the What Remains quest to become part of House Va’ruun by talking to Anasko Va’ruun.
    • By becoming a member of House Va’ruun, you will be allowed to enter the city of Dazra. The people around the city will be a bit hesitant to greet you or to be seen with you. Here you must take part in their ritual to become an official member of their community. By taking a ritual The Serpent’s Path. It introduces ritualistic trials for you to go through to earn your place in the city of Dazra.

Note: If you don’t want to go through the ritual steps, you can skip them to finish the trials for the Serpent’s Path faster.

After your ritual is complete, then you can head to Mourning Ship’s cockpit to meet the other members of House Va’ruun. Finish the quest The Promised, Broken, here Ekris Kaisir will let you know about Vortex Grenade crafting during your discussion about demolitions.

Now that you are aware of the grenade types and the steps you need to follow to acquire them, it is time to focus on the materials needed to build them at Industrial Workbench.

Where To Get Materials To Craft Vortex Grenades?

    Starfield Shattered Space feature image

Almost all the crafting materials required to craft the Vortex Grenades are random drops from the Vortex enemies found all throughout Va’ruun’kai.

    Vortex Shard (Common Drop):

Common drop by Vortex Phantom and Vortex Horror. After you kill a Vortex Phantom or horror, you will only get one Vortex Shard from their corpse. Since they are common enemy types, you will get a good amount of the shard if you loot every corpse.

    Vortex Cyst (Common Drop):

Drops from Vortex Horror, a common drop just like Vortex Shard, you will find both Vortex Shard and Cyst from Vortex Horrors and Vortex Phantoms.

    Glowing Vortex Cyst (Uncommon Drop):

Here we are moving on to the uncommon field, A Glowing Vortex Cyst is just a different type of Vortex Cyst and drops from killing Vortex Horrors but the chances of getting the Glowing Vortex Cyst is a complete RNG.

    Dark Vortex Cyst (Uncommon Drop):

Dark Vortex Cyst also follows the same rule as the Glowing Vortex Cyst, you will need to mow down as many Vortex Horrors as possible to get your hands on this uncommon type of Vortex Cyst.

After gathering all the materials needed for the preferred grenade type, head on to the Industrial Workbench found inside the Hollow Bluff Depot or you can just craft the machine in your ship or any of the outpost.
