While exploring the northwest coastal region in the Gothic 1 Remake, you may find yourself in possession of a mysterious item known as the Captain’s Ship Key. Ever since the days of the original Gothic, this has been a quest that has stumped many a player.
So below, we’ll detail where you can find this key, where to take it, what it opens, and the rewards that follow. It’s also a relatively easy item to find, as is the thing it unlocks.
Where To Find The Captain’s Ship Gothic
Before we can find the Captain’s Ship Key, we need to find the Captain’s Ship – the thing it unlocks. That’s because the route to the key from the ship is relatively straightforward.
The Captain’s Ship is located on the east coast of the Colony, slightly north of the Old Camp, but all the way east near the sea. If you travel east from the Old Camp, then follow the coast north, you’ll eventually spot some shipwrecks, and the ship you need is pretty easy to locate.
It sticks out like a sore thumb and is the one with the mysterious locked door. You can lockpick it, but it’s a high level, so we’re going to go and find the key instead – unless you’re using lockpick mods. If so, go on in!
The Captain’s Ship Key is located in a cave north of here, so look to the horizon and get ready to climb some cliffs.
Where To Find The Captain’s Ship Key
Head north from the Captain’s Ship and follow the cliff line. You’ll eventually need to drop down to a lower cliff and then a beach that contains some goblins. Kill them and look for a nearby cave. This is where we’re going to find the Captain’s Ship Key.
Enter the cave and kill any goblins that attack. Be careful when you approach the big open area; there’s a juvenile troll, and he packs one hell of a punch. Kill him if you’re strong enough, but running past him and looting the chest you need is also a viable option.
But remember, you’ll need to lose the troll’s aggro if you’re to safely open the chest. That’s because it’s locked and will require you to lockpick it, but it’s only a level 3 chest, so it’s not too difficult.
With the key in your possession, head back to the Captain’s Ship and unlock the door. Inside, you’ll find a Recipe for Seaforest Brew, a longsword, an Amulet of Protection, and a potion of strength. There’s also a level 4 locked chest if you’re proficient in lockpicking. If not, come back later.
Remember, there’s even more loot deep at the bottom of this shipwreck beach, but you’ll need the dive skill from Homer at the New Camp if you’re to survive the swim to the bottom – but it’s well worth it.
