Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a pretty faithful remake of the original Assassin’s Creed 4 and mostly follows the story beat for beat. However, Resynced allows Edward Kenway to recruit various side characters as officers on his ship, with each of them bringing a different perk.
Four of these five officers are recruited naturally as part of the story, provided you complete all the quests, but one is only obtained by following the new content in the form of the A World Without Gold – and this is the officer who’s causing all the excitement.
Recruiting the first four Officers

Below, we’ll explain how to recut every officer in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and what you’ll need to do
Adéwalé
You’ll unlock the first four Officers by simply playing through the story and completing the quests in order. The first officer you’ll unlock is Adéwalé during the Sequence 2 quest, The Treasure Fleet. Adé will automatically become the Jackdaw’s quartermaster after some bartering in a scripted event. He then agrees to remain on the ship after Edward claims it as his own.
Unlike the other officers, Adéwalé doesn’t bring any extra gameplay perks or upgrades, but he is set to become an important player in the wider Assassin’s Creed universe.
Lucy Baldwin
Lucy is unlocked during the quest A Proper Shipwright, during Sequence 4. The quest will trigger once you complete the main quest, This Old Cove. Some dialogue with Adéwalé will trigger the quest, which will involve sailing to Salt Key Bank and freeing Lucy from the British Navy.
Once recruited, Lucy does bring a helpful perk to the Jackdaw in that having her aboard greatly reduces damage in naval combat when bracing for impact. This is why players would be wise to complete the A Proper Shipwright quest as soon as they can. Lucy also has her own questline that fleshes out her character in more detail.
The Padre
Like Lucy, The Padre can be recruited once the main quest, This Old Cove, has been completed during Sequence 4. This will trigger the quest, A Second Chance, and players will be free to travel to Caracol on the southeast part of the map and recruit Abel “The Padre” Galvão.
The Padre will serve as master-at-arms aboard the Jackdaw, and you’ll likely see him terrorizing the poor unfortunate souls you attack when you board another vessel. But more importantly, The Padre grants the perk of being able to ram-dash ships with the Jackdaw. This allows you to speed up for a short time to make a bigger impact when you ram enemy ships for massive damage.
Anne Bonny
You’ll recruit Anne as quartermaster, replacing Adéwalé, after completing the Everything is Permitted quest during Sequence 11.
This happens regardless of what you do and is a fixed story event. Anne doesn’t bring any additional perks or abilities to the role; it’s simply to facilitate Adéwalé’s departure when he joins the Assassin’s full-time.
Recruiting the Master Gunner Officer

Here’s where things get really interesting. When it comes to recruiting the Master Gunner Officer in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, this doesn’t happen naturally as part of the story. It involves completing a series of side quests that eventually unlock Tobias “Deadman” Smith as your Master Gunner.
You’ll be able to start the A World Without Gold questline once you complete the Sequence 11 quest, Everything is Permitted. This is brand new content for Resynched and almost serves as a Sequence between 11 and 12.
Play through the questline, and you’ll naturally meet Deadman after you defeat the HMS Demolition in a rather difficult naval battle. So be sure to have upgraded the Jackdaw to a high level before attempting this.
When you’re back in Great Inagua, you’ll be able to recruit Deadman as part of the It’s a Start portion of the quest. Once recruited, Deadman’s perk will kick in, which allows your broadside cannons to fire an extra blast during naval fights, making the Jackdaw a serious threat to any ships it goes into battle with from now on.
Of course, Deadman’s perk is a total game-changer for endgame exploration when hunting legendary ships and completing other naval events. With his skill and a fully upgraded Jackdaw, there will be little to stand in your way as you dominate the waters of the Caribbean.
