Leviathans are massive monsters in Subnautica 2 that are quite the sight to behold – and best avoided if you’re going to survive in the harsh open sea. While we already did a deep dive into all of the main Leviathans in the game, there’s another mysterious sea monster that players have found out about, a more Elusive Leviathan, if you will.
The Elusive Leviathan in Subnautica 2 isn’t one of the regular ones you can come across in the game. Below, we’ll explain exactly what we know about this hidden monster and what it means for the future of the game.
What is the Elusive Leviathan in Subnautica 2?

First off, the Elusive Leviathan isn’t something you can just go and find in Subnautica 2.
The creature isn’t an official part of the early access game and shouldn’t be considered canon or some secret that can be unlocked. But nor is it a glitch. Instead, the Elusive Leviathan is an unfinished asset that’s hidden away in the game’s files.
This is how players were able to discover it, but not only that, they were able to bring it into the game using mods and the console. So technically, it can be encountered, but it’s not supposed to be part of the Subnautica 2 early access experience.
At least not yet. While there’s every possibility that the Elusive Leviathan never sees the light of day and remains an unused and discarded asset, it could also get officially added to the game after early access, or in a future patch.
The fact that it never got finished and remains in the game files suggests the dev team weren’t happy with it. However, the opposite could be true, and Unknown Worlds may be saving the mysterious beast for another time, making some tweaks to its final design.
While the Elusive Leviathan has some sound and visual work, even some gameplay behavior, it’s clearly unfinished and will need more work before it ever joins the game properly. The behavior is especially interesting and pertains to why it’s earned its name as the Elusive Leviathan.
The creature is programmed to be mysterious and elusive, swimming into the depths when approached and disappearing if the player tries to give chase. It also leaves behind a trail of dangerous ooze that can harm players who attempt to pursue it.
This suggests that the Elusive Leviathan is supposed to be hard to track down and may represent a greater secret that’s yet to be revealed. Or, it could mean nothing at all and get left on the cutting room floor.
What does the Elusive Leviathan look like?

The Elusive Leviathan looks like a huge dragon creature with massive horns that always appears to be emitting poisonous smoke – not unlike creatures seen in Monster Hunter.
Like the other Leviathans, it’s very large and could rip the player apart quickly if engaged in a fight. However, the creature is more interested in being elusive than it is in eating or picking a fight with the player.
It remains to be seen if the developers will comment on the Elusive Leviathan or if they have plans for the creature. It may go down as a modern-day MissingNo, or it could represent a tantalizing taste of what’s to come in Subnautica 2 when it leaves early access.
