Windrose is about pirates, and piracy means there’s a chance you can find buried treasure. Since I haven’t yet found any, I can only say that this is allegedly true, but I’ve still taken the time to craft a shovel just in case. You should, too.
The shovel can also be used as a weapon, or to raise and flatten terrain, giving you additional options regarding how you want to design your base. The actual terraforming process takes some getting used to, but you could build a raised base and dig a moat around it if you wanted to.
Learning the Shovel Recipe

Recipes are mostly unlocked in Windrose by gathering or crafting a material that can then be used as a component for other crafting recipes. So, for unlocking the recipe for the shovel, this means making copper ingots.
Now, to make copper ingots, you need copper, charcoal, and a smelting furnace.
Let’s tackle the charcoal part first, and again, here, you need to first make a charcoal kiln using 20 * Clay, and 25 * Wood. Once you have that, you can then make 1 * Charcoal with every 1 * Wood using this Charcoal Kiln.
Now, let’s look at the smelting furnace. You can make one with 30 * Stone and 15 * Clay.

Finally, the last requirement – copper ore. For this, you need to go inside a cave and gather copper ore using a pickaxe, which is part of your tutorial quests and will make your map with the location of the nearest cave with copper.
When you have the ore, you can use 4 * Copper Ore and 1 * Charcoal to make 1 * Copper Ingot at the smelting furnace.

When you have a copper ingot, you unlock new recipes that require copper ingots to craft. This includes the shovel.
Making a Shovel

The shovel is crafted at a workbench, which you should have at this point already, since you can’t do much without one, and it only takes five pieces of wood to craft. To craft the shovel, you need 3 * Copper Ingots and 10 * Wood.
It has 100 ATK, which is the same as the stone pickaxe and axe, so it’s better as a tool than as a weapon.
When you have a shovel equipped, you get a mini menu that lets you swap through its functions, which includes Weapon, Dig, Raise, and Flatten as possible modes. However you want to use it, it’s good to have a shovel on hand in Windrose.
