As a survival game, Windrose makes you do a lot of crafting. For most crafts, you’ll need to have charcoal and coarse fabric as basic options. Then, for a steady supply of gunpowder, you need ash.
Luckily, you’ll end up getting all three of these materials simply by following the tutorial quests, as you unlock the recipes from those quests, giving you access to them. Overall, they just take some time to craft, and you need to gather a lot of wood and plant fibers first.
Getting Coarse Fabric

Of these materials, coarse fabric is the one you’ll access first. When you have a workbench, which is a craft that requires five pieces of wood, you can use it to craft coarse fabric.
Then, you just need three pieces of plant fiber per one piece of coarse fabric. Plant fiber can be collected by cutting down a bush (press E with the weapon of your choice), which you’ll find in no shortage around the island. Additionally, you can get shrub seeds that let you plant shrubs where you want them.
Getting Charcoal and Ash

Charcoal and ash are available a bit later in the tutorial. When you first collect clay, you unlock new building recipes that use clay, and those recipes include the charcoal kiln. You will also need this to craft a Shovel in Windrose.
With 25 pieces of wood and 20 pieces of clay, you can craft a charcoal kiln, but it has to be within range of your bonfire to work.
Then, once it’s built, you need one piece of wood per each piece of charcoal you want to make. Unlike the recipes you’ve had access to prior to the kiln, it takes a short time for the wood to be processed into charcoal.
As an added bonus, making charcoal produces one piece of ash per each piece of charcoal you craft, which is a nice byproduct. With ash, you’ll be able to craft your own bullets, as this is your main component for gunpowder. While you can make bullets without gunpowder, that kind is mediocre and suitable just for early-game opponents.
From here, you start to unlock more complex crafting recipes, and your next step should be building a smelting furnace, which uses charcoal to produce ingots from ore in Windrose.
