Bethesda just announced that all PS Plus subscribers, who received the Fallout 4 from PS Plus collection will also be able to access the free next gen update of Fallout 4.
This should come as a major relief to all who would have downloaded the game to play again from their PS Plus collection, but would have soon discovered that they were unable to upgrade to the next-gen patch put out by Bethesda for Fallout 4. The move also makes a lot of sense since the previous situation did not treat a PS Plus subscription on par with someone who had bought the game – something that would not reflect well on the attractiveness of a PS Plus membership; which Playstation has been pushing hard in competition to Game Pass.
The Fallout 4 next gen patch was released on Apr 25, and promised the long-awaited 60 FPS performance on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X along with a host of other improvements like support for widescreen and ultra-wide screen monitors for PC, addition of a new quest ‘Echoes of the Past’ and new collectibles as well. The early reception to the patch notes has not been the best though, with several PC users complaining on the widescreen support actually stretching out the UI; and the next-gen performance update not making too drastic a change to visual appearances on the consoles.
Update: In response to the issues cited by several users to the next-gen update for Fallout 4, the devs released a 2nd update a couple of weeks later, on May 13th 2024, to precisely address these issues and other bug fixes like reserve space not showing up, character name field in widescreen mode, restart issues after downloading mods, crash issues when reconnecting to network, and also giving players the option between Performance and Visual modes when playing the game.
Similar to Skyrim and it’s various versions, an Anniversary Edition for Fallout 4 was released in Oct 2025 – though that did not go down well with the gaming community in general thanks to issues with mods and Creation Club content. These hiccups, however, have not dented the Fallout 4 sales engine, as it chugged its way to a 35 million units number by July 2026.
