If you’ve been confused by the latest Infinity Nikki drama, let’s do a recap of what has been going on in the past week and why it matters. Now, the Infinity Nikki community has always been fairly vocal, as displayed after the apocalyptic 1.5 update release, dramas about the game being cozy enough or gacha enough, the meanings behind certain outfits, and down to small things like typos in posts.
Usually, Infold tends to listen to its Chinese fan base, which is the loudest and typically more organised when pushing against the devs, as opposed to the more multifaceted and chaotic global community.
A small community of Chinese Infinity Nikki fans who spend a pretty penny on the cosmetic and gacha part of the game complained that the latest outfit re-run of Timeless Melody was too revealing. This would be an issue if it were a new outfit, but considering that it is a rerun, it led to lots of confusion.
These fans call themselves “Nikki’s moms,” who play as their ‘daughter’, Nikki, and tend to infantilize the character, who is 19 years old according to the game’s canon. The same community believes Nikki shouldn’t be wearing dresses they deem inappropriate. Following the censorship calls for Timeless Melody, Nikki’s moms have now started attacking other outfits.
What Set Off the Nikki Censorship War?
The inappropriate part that triggered the civil war within the community is the cleavage in a dress. While most never even thought of it twice, the developers heeded the calls to tone it down, raising the hem to show no part of it.
That made players put older outfits through a magnifying glass and see that many have “modesty” panels, spotlighting new issues like these additions looking awful on darker-skinned Nikkis.
Now, because their complaints were heard so fast and Infold patched the outfit within a day, that made the fanbase unusually angry. There have been bugs that aren’t patched up, the issues of no communication during the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, how long it took during the 1.5 fiasco to get answers or any response, while the game wouldn’t even open for so many users.
Following the censorship calls for Timeless Melody, Nikki’s moms have now started attacking other outfits.
Many Infinity Nikki fans came forward to say they felt represented in the game, liking how tasteful different outfits were made, how nothing actually was showing vulgarity or made them feel uncomfortable with their own bodies or Nikki’s while dressing her up. This also sparked a massive wave of photos of outfits across all social media platforms that aren’t censored and show Nikki’s cleavage far more than the censored Timeless Melody outfit, to show that it is all artistic and just how nudity can be a form of expression, so are outfits in a very beloved game that the developers have put out by their own free will in the first place.
It also raises the issue that many have bought Timeless Melody without censorship, meaning that Infold affected a product that others already bought without consulting or communicating with them. Given the unpredictability of the Chinese fanbase of Infinity Nikki, we don’t know what will happen now. Hopefully, Nikki won’t be censored, and people can continue playing without useless censorship.
