Depending on the size of the world you choose, Terraria can be a pretty enormous game! If you’ve played Large Worlds, you’ll know it can be pretty exhausting travelling all the way across the map just to gather some ingredients and materials.
Back in the day, we used to use teleporters and wire them all the way across the map, but luckily, now we have Pylons! Pylons make travelling a breeze, and they’re pretty easy to set up, once you know what you’re doing.
So let’s take a look at every pylon in Terraria, as well as the 2 new ones that came with patch 1.4.5!
All Pylons in Terraria – Locations

There are 11 types of pylons at the moment of writing. To get them all, you might need to shift around the NPCs a little bit. Pylons can be placed above or below ground; just note the location that each NPC likes to reside. Some prefer being on the surface.
In addition, it’s important to note that Pylons cannot be used while you’re in a boss fight. Pylons also cannot be bought in Corrupted and Crimson Biomes. Different Pylons can be bought in different stages of the game, like early-game, hardmode and Post-Moon Lord.
| Pylon Name | Cost | How To Obtain / Appropraite NPC |

| Cavern Pylon | 10 Gold | Demolishionist Tax Collector Clothier |
| Ocean Pylon | 10 Gold | Pirate Merchant Angler |
| Jungle Pylon | 10 Gold | Dryad Painter Witch Doctor |

| Aether Pylon | 10 Gold | This Pylon cannot be bought from an NPC. Instead, you must throw any other pylon into the Shimmer, and you will receive this. |
| Universal Pylon | 1 Platinum | This can only be obtained post-Moon Lord, after completing 100% of the Bestiary. It can be bought from the Zoologist |
What are Pylons?

Pylons are essentially teleporters that you can set up inside a building when surrounded by happy NPCs. Once you have multiple Pylons, you can stand near them and instantly teleport yourself to another biomes Pylon, no matter where it is on the map.
Of course, if only it were as simple as buying them from any old shop, right? Instead, you must have at least 2 NPCs that have sufficient happiness values before they will choose to sell a Pylon.
To get an NPC to be happy, they must be housed with other NPCs that they like being around, and in their Biome of choice.
For example, the Arms Dealer likes being in the Desert biome, and he loves being near the Nurse. If you place him in a Snowy biome, with someone like the Demonolishionist, he’s not going to be chuffed.
Once you’ve built a home in the desert and filled it with NPCs like the Nurse, the Princess or the Steampunker, now he will sell you the Desert Pylon, allowing you to travel there and back at will, simply by opening the world map.
While you need to place the Pylons in their respective biomes, you can place them in overlapping Biomes too! For example, the Snow and Hallow Pylon in a Hallowed Tundra Biome. The Universal Pylon can be placed anywhere and doesn’t need NPCs around it to function.
