The newest patch of Terraria brings forth a huge amount of wonderful quality-of-life updates, stellar customisation options and of course, a wicked number of new weapons.
Chief among these are a huge amount of whips, further bolstering the armoury of those Summoner enthusiasts.
Summoning has always been a strange one in Terraria. It came out a fair while after the original 3 combat options, and as such has always felt a little bare in comparison. These weapons seek to bring them up to par and make Summoning, not only viable, but a powerful option for those seeking a new playstyle.
Let’s take a look at these new Summoning Whips and what they bring to the table.
Cobwhip

This Whip can be created with the following items:
- 10 Wood
- 30 Cobwebs
This is an extremely easy weapon to obtain early on in your Summoner’s playthrough. All you have to do is grab these easy-to-find materials and have a loom around to craft this whip.
While it may not be super powerful, it has the added effect of summoning baby spiders when you hit an enemy. Better than nothing, right?
Slime Whip

This Whip can be created with the following items:
- 50 Gel
Once you defeat King Slime and get your hands on the Solidifier, you can craft this next Whip upgrade. This is a pretty significant upgrade over the Cobwhip and allows you to set your enemies on fire when you hit them.
Vasculash and Soulscourge

These next 2 Whips can be created with the following items:
- 12 Crimtane Bars
- 12 Demonite Bars
As you might have imagined, the next whip you obtain will depend on which World Evil is currently affecting your map.
If you have Crimson, you’ll be able to create the Vasculash on an Anvil. And if you have Corruption, you’ll be able to create the Soulscourge. These weapons don’t seem to have any bonus effects, though they have a higher base max hit than the Slime Whip, which will probably make it worth your while.
Starcrash

This Whip can be created with the following items:
- 20 Meteorite Bars
- 10 Fallen Stars
- 10 Chain
The Starcrash is also made normally at an Iron or Lead Anvil. While this Whip seems to have a lower base damage than the previous 2 whips, the special effect more than makes up for it.
Hitting an enemy with the Starcrash will prime them with energy. When one of your summons hits that enemy, a meteorite will spawn and do a good chunk of damage to them. These meteorites spawn pretty close by, unlike Falling Stars, which very rarely hit their enemies.
Vulgar Display of Flower

- This Whip has a chance of dropping from Plantera
This whip has a massively increased range compared to the other whips in this list, and in terms of power, naturally puts them to shame.
Once you hit an enemy with this whip, a bunch of flower petals will spawn around them. These petals will home in on any targets nearby and deal additional damage.
Electric Eel

- This Whip has a chance of dropping from Duke Fishron
This next weapon is brilliant when you’re facing off against large groups, like the seasonal events or an invasion. Not only does it have a massive amount of base damage, but it also has a massive reach.
When you hit one enemy with this, it becomes electrified. Any enemies that are nearby will have that electric energy bounce between them. Any group of tightly packed enemies will die extremely fast.
Constellation

This Whip can be created with the following items:
- 18 Stardust fragments
Before you’re able to craft this, you’ll need to defeat the Lunatic Cultist for the first time. Upon death, he will drop the Ancient Manipulator, which is the crafting station used for all the Pre-Moonlord Space Weapons.
Next, head over to the area where the Stardust enemies are spawning and collect as many fragments as possible.
The constellation doesn’t have as much base damage as the Electric Eel, for example, but upon hitting an enemy, little stars will spawn that strike your enemy for additional damage. This more than makes up for the base damage drop, and means you can attack more easily when moving and dodging.
Possesion

- This Whip has a chance of dropping from the Moon Lord
Naturally, this is the most powerful Whip in the game, without a doubt. Similarly to the previous Whip, the base damage isn’t really important here, even though you hit your enemies with multiple tendrils at a time.
Instead, you prime your enemies with energy. When your summons hit this enemy, little eyes will spawn, which zap them for a ridiculous amount of damage. The summoners really needed a nice power boost, and this little beauty will be sure to make them happy!
