Some of the quests in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered will have some objectives that may not make a lot of sense. During the Necromancer’s Moon quest, you will be tasked with locating and exploring the Dark Fissure Cave to find out more about the Black Soul Gems. Inside the cave, you need to wait for the necromancers to perform their ritual, but there is no indication on when it will start apart from the clue to check out the Heavenly Lights. This guide will explain how to spot the ritual in Oblivion Remastered.
Necromancer’s Moon Clue Guide Oblivion Remastered

You need to first locate the Dark Fissure Cave, which can be found by heading south of Cheydinhal, which is near Vahtacen. You can head inside the cave to find an altar, but there isn’t anything happening at this point of time. To catch the necromancers in the act of creating Black Soul Gems, you need to wait for the right time. To figure out when you should come back to witness the Shade of the Revenant, just follow the steps below.
- The ritual occurs every 8th day, and you can check the current date in-game by going through the “Days Passed” section in the statistics journal of your character.
- If you had been to jail for an entire day or so prior to this, then you might require some other means to figure out the 8th day of the calendar.
- You can calculate the 8th day by adding up the number of full days in jail with the days passed.
- Usually, the 8th day of the month will fall on the 1st, 9th, 17th, 25th, 33rd, and so on, so you can use that as a reference.
- You can also stand in front of the altar and keep skipping time till you find a dim purple light falling on the altar, indicating that this is the time of the ritual.
- Sometimes, standing too close to the altar or visiting the place during the day will not reveal the purple light. It is best to observe the altar from a distance and visit during the night to get a clearer view.
- The ritual will last an entire 24 hours, so you can check back anytime during the current day to find the necromancers.

If you don’t want to wait for the necromancers to show up, an easy way to bypass this is to kill or pickpocket the Worm Anchorite inside the cave. He will appear around midnight on most days, so you can skip time till he appears. After that, pick up the note from him and head over to Raminus to complete the quest. Also, there is a way to procure Black Soul Gems yourself, but you will require an empty Grand Soul Gem and have the Soul Trap spell to use at the altar.
