By the time you’ve reached the Metropolis in MIO: Memories In Orbit, you’ve probably already gotten a lay of the land and how the game functions as a whole. This is a Metroidvania through and through, so you’ve already learned that unlocking new paths forward is the name of the game.
The Metropolis is much more open and spread out compared to previous, corridored sections of the game, so take some time to stretch your robo-legs and breathe in the air. Okay, break’s over.
Soon into Metropolis, you’ll find a room that’s locked on both sides and requires the Old-Fashioned Key in order to gain access. Let’s track that pesky key down.

Where Is The Old-Fashioned Key Door?

As mentioned above, the room that the Old-Fashioned Key will eventually open is, of course, locked tight for the time being. Said room in question is located at the marked spot on the map above.
Since you can’t enter the room from either side, you’ll instead need to use the Hairpin and your ever-improving platforming skills in order to traverse up and over this locked room and onto the other side to the west. We’ll continue on from there below.
How To Find The Old-Fashioned Key

Keep heading west/left from this suspicious locked room, and you’ll very shortly find a path that leads downward. The point marked above is where you need to end up.
As with most of the keys/badges you’ve already found in MIO: Memories In Orbit, you aren’t going to get the Old-Fashioned Key without a fight. Prepare yourself.

Here, you’ll meet Calderon, a giant furnace robot with four hands that all have the same thing in mind – smashing you into oblivion. Still, don’t panic.
Despite meeting Calderon a little later into your MIO experience, it’s really not too bad of a boss fight at all compared to others you’ve already faced, and certainly many opponents that are yet to come.
Phase One is simple enough as you can easily dodge Calderon’s smash attacks, leveraging your dodge/parry as needed whenever you don’t have enough time to get out of harm’s way. His head is the only spot you can damage, so chip away as the generous windows open.
In Phase Two, the giant fan on the floor kicks on, which takes the fight airborne for the remainder. Calderon’s moves don’t really change, so use your same tactics as before, and take note of the Hairpin grapple point on his head if you need to pull yourself closer for attacks.
Keep at it and stay patient, and Calderon will eventually be defeated.

After your well-earned victory, continue through the now open doorway in Calderon’s arena to find the Old-Fashioned Key just waiting to be collected. Once it’s in your possession, head back to unlock either of the locked doors you found before.
What The Old-Fashioned Key Unlocks

As the item description also tells you, the Old-Fashioned Key grants you access to the Hall Of History in Metropolis.
If you’d like some extra lore, you can take the time to read all of the information panels throughout this museum of sorts to soak in as much history as you please (and perhaps get some hints at some things yet to come).

But the Hall of History is more than just a walk down memory lane. On the right side of this room, you’ll also find a new elevator, which takes you to Foundations Access and the Tuning Chamber.
Foundations is another new area of the game, so finding the Old-Fashioned Key is obviously critical for this purpose.

You’ll also meet a friendly robot who hands over another candle you can offer to The Eye, as well as yet another locked door that requires Lura’s Seal in order to access.
With all of that done, check yet another item off your MIO to-do list, and get back out there, explorer.
