Duet Night Abyss is the brand-new free-to-play fantasy RPG that features a hack-and-slash combat system along with a dual-protagonist narrative structure. Unlike most gacha games, unlocking characters in the game is tied to gameplay and progression, rather than rolling or pulling banners, with a new twist: Secret Letters. In this guide, we’ll explain how the Secret Letter system works, and how you can unlock more characters in Duet Night Abyss.
Earning Secret Letter Clues

You unlock characters in exchange for Secret Letter Clues. Throughout the entirety of Duet Night Abyss, you’ll earn Secret Letter Clues by playing the main story, side quests, exploration, daily quests, weekly quests, in-game events, and more. Once you have around 10 Secret Letter Clues, you can trade them in exchange for the Secret Letter of the character you want. You can also trade Secret Letter Clues for weapons and Demon Wedges. Completing all daily quests rewards you with 15 Secret Letter Clues per day.
Once you have purchased the Secret Letter for the character you desire, head to the Combat menu, then access the Covert Operations tab. Under the Covert Ops tab, you’ll find three categories with separate Secret Letter missions. The first category is farming characters, the second is farming weapons, while the third is farming Demon Wedges. These missions are locked at Level 40, and you need to complete the main story of Duet Night Abyss first to start farming for characters, available at launch.
The mission type in these three categories rotate hourly, so it will vary every time. This means that you need to learn which mission type suits your strengths the most. Not every mission will have the same clear time. Some will have a faster clear time, while others can take several minutes to complete. Now, let’s move on to the rewards these Secret Letter missions offer, which directly ties into how you unlock characters in Duet Night Abyss.
Clearing Secret Letter Missions

Rewards for clearing Secret Letter missions in Duet Night Abyss are classified into Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers. Completing each mission will grant you three reward boxes, out of which you need to choose one. In these reward boxes, you have a chance to rewards from the Bronze, Silver to the Gold tier. The drop rates for Bronze tier rewards are the highest, and the lowest for Gold tier rewards.
The overall probability of obtaining Gold tier rewards is 10%. You can obtain 10 Character Shards from the Gold tier reward, and you require 30 Character Shards to unlock one copy of a specific character. From the Silver tier rewards, you have a chance to obtain 2 Character Shards, while the Bronze tier does not offer any Character Shards as of now.
This is the universal system to unlock characters in Duet Night Abyss, and basically is your endgame loop. You earn Secret Letter Clues, then trade them for the Secret Letters of your desired character, and start farming the Secret Letter missions to obtain the required Character Shards until you can unlock that character. Instead of rolling or collecting characters from banners like most gacha games, you can unlock every character in this game for free with a bit of grinding.
If you feel like the grind is too much, then you can purchase the entire character roster in the game with real money to skip the grind. Duet Night Abyss offers a “farm-or-pay” model where you either farm for the specific character, or directly purchase them with real money to avoid grinding. This model also applies to weapons in the game.
Unlocking New Characters

New characters in Duet Night Abyss will be implemented as a reward pool for the Immersive Theater Mode, which is the endgame mode. This mode will reset once every 28 days, and feature three different difficulties. Depending on your in-game level, you can start clearing out the different nodes of the difficulties, which offers a chance at obtaining Secret Letters of different characters as well as weapons.
By completing the multiple nodes in the Immersive Theater difficulties, you will be able to earn the new character in its entirety. Since this is an endgame mode, you need to be high level to complete the difficulties successfully. After 28 days, a new character will be put into the Immersive Theater reward pool, while the previous character will be added to the Nocturnal Echo game mode.
The Nocturnal Echo mode is a weekly boss challenge, clearable for up to five times a week, and offers a chance to obtain the Secret Letters of the character and their signature weapon from this game mode’s reward pool. Finally, the last way to earn Secret Letters of specific characters is to play Mystic Mayhem, which is a weekly roguelike boss mode. That’s all you need to know about how to unlock characters via the Secret Letter system in Duet Night Abyss.
