In the tough open world of Valheim, you will face various challenges and rewards as you explore diverse biomes. One of the essential aspects of survival in Valheim is establishing a sustainable food source which can be through farming. Farming helps grow food items that are a big help when exploring; restoring health and stamina. This guide is a detailed step-by-step process on how to plant seeds in Valheim and protect the crops in the game.
How To Plant Seeds In Valheim
You can plant seeds and grow crops in Valheim equipping a Cultivator – which is crafted at the Forge; selecting the seed that you want to plant and selecting the ground where you want to plant them. However, if you have played any Valheim, then you may have guessed correctly that each of these steps will have you collect several resources and craft equipment. You cannot begin farming immediately; You must first make some preparations.
Acquiring The Antler Pickaxe
Defeat Eikthyr, the game’s first boss, to obtain the Antler Pickaxe that enables you to mine tin and copper; and use them to produce bronze.
Then, go to the Black Forest biome to get copper and tin ore. The tin will be close to water bodies and appear as a rock emerging from the earth with a faint glow. Large moss-covered rock formations with a golden shine are places to get copper.
Crafting Stations
Then, craft the following stations:
- Charcoal Kiln: 20 * Stone, 5 * Surtling Core. This converts wood to coal, which is used as fuel at the Smelter.
- Smelter: 20* Stone, 5 * Surtling Core. This helps convert copper and tin ore into ingots.
- Forge: 4* Stone, 4 * Coal, 10 * Wood, 6 * Copper. This helps convert copper and tin ingots to bronze. Bronze is a necessary resource to craft the Cultivator.
Crafting The Cultivator
Create the Cultivator at the Forge by collecting:
- 5 * Core Wood
- 5 * Bronze
You can plant seeds that you’ve been finding with the cultivator. Grass that has been leveled using a hoe can also be grown again with the help of the Cultivator.
Cultivating The Land
Tilling the ground is the first stage in planting seeds. This can be done by utilizing the Cultivator, which is the Build Menu’s default action. You can sow seeds when the soil is ready.
Planting The Seeds
Though you will need to visit specific zones to find them, seeds aren’t very rare in Valheim. There are two different kinds of seeds in Valheim: Food seeds and tree seeds.
Types of food seeds:
- Carrot seeds – Black Forest
- Magecaps – Mistlands.
- Turnip seeds – Swamp
- Jotun – Mistlands
Types of tree seeds:
- Acorns – Meadows
- Birch seeds – Meadows and Plains
- Pine cones – Black Forest
- Beech seeds – Meadows
- Fir cones – Black Forest and Mountain
Equip the Cultivator in your hands, open your inventory, and select a seed or tree. Click on the ground and the seed or tree will be planted. You don’t need to tend to them or water them, they’ll grow by themselves over time. While planting the seeds make sure to leave some space between two seeds, if there is not enough space between the seeds they will not grow.
How To Protect Your Farm
It is a good idea to protect the seeds by building a fence which can either be a
- Roundpole fence (1 wood) or
- A Stakewall (4 wood) around your garden plot.
And with that, you should have a nice farm with plenty of ingredients that you can gather.
