The defensive shield is obtained through the Shield Generator.
If you are looking to fortify your base in Valheim; we have put together a definitive guide on how to craft and use the Shield Generator in Valheim.

How To Use The Shield Generator In Valheim
Charred Bones or Bone Fragments act as fuel to run the Shield Generator.
Bone Fragments are usually dropped from skeleton enemies found inside the Burial Chambers and Troll Caves of Black Forest Biome. These caves also have Rancid Remains, which also can drop bones.
- Stone Graves and Viking Graveyards in the Meadows biome;
- Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome; and
- The Tar Pits in the Plains
are also good places to farm Bone Fragments.
Charred Bones drop from defeating Charred enemies like the Charred Warlocks, Charred Warriors, Charred Marksmans, and Charred Twitchers in the new Ashland biome.
You need to gather around 10 Bones of either type and feed them to the Shield Generator. And with that, you can power up the Shield Generator and protect your base.
What Does The Shield Generator Do In Valheim?
The Shield Generator offers protection up to 30 meters and is useful in deflecting most projectiles and other environmental hazards. Activating the shield can help you in farming Flametal Pillars, as you will be protected from the fiery projectiles that spew out of there. The shield does have a limited durability of 1500, and for each 500 Damage it takes, it will consume 1 Fuel. You should have a steady stream of Bones around to fuel the shield and avoid taking damage to your base
