Collecting resources while exploring the world is a big part of the overall Valheim gameplay experience. From Black Metal Scrap to Guck, Valheim offers its players a wide range of resources to make weapons and equipment; which in turn help make your base and your character stronger, for you to explore even more dangerous biomes for higher level resources. One such resource that is hidden and difficult to find but very rewarding is Chitin. This guide talks about where to mine Chitin in Valheim and its uses.
Where To Find Chitin In Valheim
Chitin can be mined from Abyssal Barnacles that grow on the backs of Leviathan Kraken in the Ocean Biome. These Krakens are non-aggressive giants who form islands in the Oceans.
Mining Chitins can be tough as the location of these Krakens differs from time to time. These giants will submerge and resurface at random. Moreover, if they feel that you are trying to mine Chitin from the Abyssal Barnacles, they might take notice and sink below, making your efforts go to waste!

To search the seas in search of Kraken, you will first need to build a strong sailing ship. This can be done by unlocking the Karve Ship (made using 10 * Deer Hide, 20 * Resin, 30 * Fine Wood, and 80 * Bronze Nails).
Pro Tip: You can mine more quickly using an Iron Pickaxe (max level requires 9 * Core Wood and 80 * Iron).
After building your ship and taking your pickaxe, you can head out to the Ocean. Be wary as you might encounter Sea Serpents.
Once you notice small, dome-shaped islands, you can be assured that it is a Kraken. Sail close to the giant and keep your boat facing it (in case it submerges and you need a quick way to escape) and look for large, rounded growths with a brown stone in the center. These are the Abyssal Barnacles on the back of the Kraken and can be found in groups of three.
You have to hit the Barnacles with your Iron Pickaxe to extract Chitin. The stronger your pickaxe, the fewer strikes you need. Make a note to keep checking your health as you might have the need to sail back to your boat in case the Kraken starts submerging.
With each Barnacle you mine, the chances of the Kraken sinking will increase by 10%. Once the Kraken is about to go down into the waves, it will signal it with a howling sound. You should immediately start escaping as you will only have 20 seconds before the Kraken completely disappears underwater.
