Undertale is a challenging game that will test your skills in unique ways. As if the game wasn’t hard enough, there is a Hard Mode which you can unlock through a special method. If you like a challenge and are looking for ways to test yourself, then this is the way to go. While it is called Hard Mode, you would be prepared a second time around if you had already completed your first playthrough. This guide will cover how to unlock Hard Mode in Undertale.
Undertale Hard Mode Guide

Hard Mode in Undertale can be unlocked by typing in the name Frisk for the Fallen Human. You will encounter this menu option at the very start of the game. Doing so will give you a unique notification informing the player that they will enter Hard Mode if they choose this name. Select the Yes option to confirm your choice. From the get go, you will notice several new changes, such as finding tougher enemy encounters in the earlier levels. Below are some of the changes that you will face in Hard Mode.
- Instead of finding Froggits and other early game enemies, you will instead be forced to fight off harder enemies like Final Froggits and Astigmatisms.
- You can only pick up 3 pieces of Monster Candy instead of 4.
- Wearing a bandage does not guarantee that you can flee, and you also cannot run away during the first turn.
- You get a different battle theme that says “Stronger Monsters” instead.
- Toriel bakes a different pie called Snail Pie because of the lack of ingredients acquired. She will also not help you solve any puzzles in The Ruins.
- The Toriel boss fight gets tougher, as her attack stat is increased from 6 to 8.

But Hard Mode does not go on forever, and it only lasts till the Ruins. Once you get to the point of fighting Toriel, you can expect Annoying Dog to interrupt the fight. Even if Toriel’s health has depleted, she won’t be dead. Annoying Dog will then inform the player that they have reached the end of Hard Mode, and the game will reset. You will be taken back to the naming menu for the Fallen Human, and you can use a different name or go with Frisk again if you want to feel the challenge some more. You will also get a unique ending scene for Hard Mode with a different interaction from Flowey.
As for whether Hard Mode will be implemented for the rest of the game, it seems highly unlikely, since the game came around years ago. But you can still experience a tiny section of it to know what to expect if you do end up meeting tougher enemies early in the game.
