The Tracking Unknows challenge in Fallout 76 begins with the news of a missing Hunting Party from the Free States. Your quest begins in the Harpers Ferry area where you are presented with the three terminals to follow up the clues that will uncover the mystery behind the sudden disappearances.
1. Listen to the Radio Broadcast
Locations: Harpers Ferry and North of Valley Galleria
In the Harpers Ferry, the first clue in the quest presents itself in the form of a radio broadcast, where you receive a distress signal coming from the north of the Galleria. Keep your radio tuned to the appropriate frequency. You’ll often hear radio broadcasts mentioning sightings of Unknowns in specific locations.
Next, walk up to the cliff of North Valley Galleria. You will find the bodies of two settlers and a note from Courtney, who is one of the missing settlers. The note reveals that a group of ghouls attacked Courtney and other hunters. She also mentions that she saw a signal booster at the end of the abandoned Tronic Store. You will find a Mister Gutsy bot guarding the corpses, who will nudge you to find the signal booster.
2. Find the Signal Booster
Location: Harpers Ferry / North of Valley Galleria
Your trip to the Signal Booster isn’t going to be easy, you will need to fight multiple scorched ghouls to reach the Tronic Store. If you are unable to find the signal booster here, you can try exploring the Harpers Ferry area. After you have obtained the signal booster, you will need a cargobot to transport it back to the camp.
3. Summoning the Cargobot
Location: Camp
To bring out the Cargobot you need to head back to the camp. Now, proceed to the landing pad, here you will need to interact with the terminal requesting a Cargobot. After this, your request will be reciprocated with the arrival of the bot, attach the signal booster to it for tracking the source of the signal.

4. Track the Distress Beacon to its Source
Location: Large power lines near the Southern Belle Motel
Once you track down the signal, you will be led to the source of it, which is near the Southern Belle Motel. Here, two more corpses of Randy Calloway and Nari Samir await you. Explore the belongings of these hunters to obtain necessary items. The holotapes in this area reveal that the remaining settlers were directed to seek refuge in the sewers beneath the Dyer Chemical plant.
5. Enter the Sewers in Dyer Chemical Plant
Location: Dyer Chemical Plant
After reaching the Dyer Chemical Plant, you need to find the entrance to the sewers. You will find it alongside the river in the area, which is on the west side of the facility. Watch out for bots that will be guarding the entrance of the sewers. You will find an ID lying around the entrance of the sewers. Before entering this area, you can put on a radiation suit to protect yourself from additional damage.
After you are inside the sewers, you need to proceed straight and take the first left turn that appears. Now, you will finally enter the pipe, take the first right, and then turn left. Continue to walk straight until you come across a flight of stairs.
You will now come across a door, open it, and enter the area. You need to take another right turn from the gallery which will lead you to another staircase, walk down the stairs and you will finally find Lucy Harwick’s dead body behind the machines.

6. Retrieve the last Holotape
Location: Dyer Chemical Plant Sewers
Probe Lucy’s dead body and you will find the last clue of this quest, a holotape with the entire truth of the unfortunate deaths of the hunting party. If you wish to learn more about the context of the mass murders, you can probe around some more and find a second holotape from Duncan Mckann’s body.
