Avowed offers an immersive storyline that takes you on a ride with your Envoy and team as you get to the bottom of what’s transpiring within the Living Lands. Sometimes, you have to make some decisions that will decide the trajectory of your storyline. One such choice that you have to make is while completing A Path to the Garden quest, where you need to decide whether to kill Captain Aelfyr or not in Avowed.
A Path To The Garden: All Choices & Consequences
While venturing out to Shatterscarp to reach Thirdborn, you pick up the main quest A Path to the Garden. You will reach this location while traveling far north of Grim Wetlands in Emerald Stair, and it is here where you get to make the choice about Captain Aelfyr. You will be stopped at Shatterscarp Gatehouse by the Captain, and you have to decide whether you wish to stay cordial with her or take her down.
Attack Captain Aelfyr
As you would remember, Captain Aelfyr did participate in burning down Fior mes Inverno during the earlier questline. If that left a bitter taste for you, then it is best to take her down. Attacking her will mark her as a boss, and you also have to deal with the rest of the Steel Garrote who will attack you. If you are not prepared for the fight, then come back to the area at a later time after you get some better gear or upgrade your existing ones.
Spare Captain Aelfyr
If you don’t want to pick a fight right now, you can get on her good side and ask her to let you pass through. You can pass ahead without a hitch in the plan and gain access to your next area. But this isn’t the end of the Captain, as she will ultimately be inflicted with Dreamscourge. She will later appear at Galawain’s Tusks as a boss, and she will become tougher to beat here.

Which Option Should You Choose
It is best to fight Captain Aelfyr early on, as it will only get tougher to defeat her when you meet her at Galawain’s Tusks. So defeat her at Shatterscarp Gatehouse to stop her boss encounter later. But whichever path you choose, you get to loot her dead body to get the Death Knight Gloves. Equipping this will give you the following effect:
- Bonus: -10% reduction in stamina cost while Blocking
- Rymrgand’s Touch: +15% Frost Damage
