The cozy genre has carved out a powerful niche in the industry, offering players a relaxing refuge from the stresses of daily life.
Starsand Island, a cozy life-sim with farming elements, looks to continue that tradition in 2026 with an intense focus on community, self-expression, and narrative storytelling.
Recently, I had the opportunity to contact the game’s developers at Seed Sparkle Lab for a written interview, during which they shared incredible insights into the game’s origins and what players can expect when they finally set foot on the island.
If you’re excited to see what the cozy genre’s latest masterpiece has in store, here’s everything Seed Sparkle Lab had to share.
TGS: For those discovering Starsand Island for the first time, how would you describe the game’s core vision in a single sentence?
Seed Sparkle Lab: Starsand Island is a next-generation cozy life-simulation sandbox where players can slow down, create their ideal pastoral life, and find warmth, freedom, and emotional comfort on a living island.
TGS: What initially inspired the concept for the project, and how has that vision evolved during development?
Seed Sparkle Lab: The project was inspired by our team’s shared love for life-simulation games and a deeper longing for an Eastern-style pastoral reclusive life, what we often describe as a warm, healing “spiritual utopia.”
From the beginning, we wanted to create a place where players could step away from anxiety and pressure and reconnect with simple, meaningful daily routines. Over time, that vision has grown richer through community feedback, especially during Kickstarter, helping us deepen systems like construction freedom, vehicles, and the emotional depth of NPC relationships while staying true to that original, comforting core.

TGS: What has been the biggest challenge that you’ve faced so far in development?
Seed Sparkle Lab: The biggest challenge has been the sheer scope of building a high-quality, next-generation life simulation across multiple complex systems. Starsand Island combines farming, construction, exploration, vehicles, NPC relationships, and a highly detailed world, all of which need to feel cohesive, polished, and emotionally resonant. Balancing ambition with production realities while maintaining our quality standards has been an ongoing challenge, but also a motivating one.
TGS: What’s the biggest trade-off you’ve had to make between ambition and technical feasibility?
Seed Sparkle Lab: One of the biggest trade-offs we’ve faced is balancing the scale of our open world with performance and stability. While our ambition was to create a vast, seamless environment full of interactive details, we had to make careful decisions about map size, asset density, and certain complex features to ensure smooth gameplay for everyone. We continue exploring ways to enhance the world in future updates without compromising technical performance.

Our goal is very much to allow players to define their own story
TGS: Is there a particular type of player fantasy you had in mind, or is the ultimate goal to allow the players to define their own story? (i.e., is there a “right” way and “wrong” way of playing?)
Seed Sparkle Lab: Our goal is very much to allow players to define their own story. Starsand Island does not follow a single, rigid main plot. Instead, players build their own “life story” through daily activities, relationships, and choices.
There is no right or wrong way to play. Some players may focus on farming and construction, others on relationships and exploration. The systems are designed to support different playstyles and let each player find what resonates with them.
TGS: Will in-game character customization expand after the game’s early access launch?
Seed Sparkle Lab: The EA version already features an unlimited color wheel, allowing players to freely customize their character’s appearance. In the future, we will continue to optimize and expand the character customization system based on player feedback, making the personalization experience even more complete.

TGS: Will a fast-travel system be implemented in the future? Or will in-game traversal remain largely vehicle-based?
Seed Sparkle Lab: We plan to gradually introduce a teleportation feature in future updates to facilitate quick movement, and this has already been demonstrated in related videos. Of course, vehicles and free exploration remain the core ways of getting around in the game, so players can continue to enjoy immersive adventure experiences.
Players have unprecedented freedom to design and build
TGS: What is your personal favorite feature in the game right now?
Seed Sparkle Lab: One of the features we’re most proud of is the highly flexible DIY system. Players have unprecedented freedom to design and build — from crafting furniture and decorating interiors to shaping entire landscapes and structures. Every detail can be customized, allowing players to truly express their creativity and personality on the island. Watching players transform blank spaces into unique, living environments has been incredibly rewarding for the team.

TGS: Are there any features or systems you’re excited to add that won’t be available in the initial launch?
Seed Sparkle Lab: Yes, there are several features we’re excited to add after the initial launch. For example, we’re planning to introduce more advanced social and relationship systems, new areas to explore, additional customization options, and seasonal events. These features will help expand gameplay depth and variety, and we look forward to developing them based on player feedback during early access.
TGS: Do you have any plans for DLC or additional content post-launch? If so, what kinds of experiences are you hoping to explore?
Seed Sparkle Lab: Yes, we do plan to release free DLC after the full version launches. This content is currently in the planning stage and is intended to provide players with additional gameplay and extended experiences. It will be introduced after the full release is stable.

TGS: Were there any features that you were excited to include, but had to cut due to technical limitations or time constraints?
Seed Sparkle Lab: Yes, there were some features we were excited to include but haven’t been able to implement yet due to technical challenges and time constraints. For example, we originally planned an outer islands exploration system to offer more adventure opportunities. As development progresses, we hope to add this feature in future updates.
TGS: Looking back, what’s one thing about Starsand Island that turned out very different from what you expected?
Seed Sparkle Lab: Looking back, what surprised us most was how much player feedback and participation influenced the game’s direction. The ideas, suggestions, and creativity from the community constantly inspired us and led to features we never planned at the beginning. Their involvement turned development into a shared journey and made the world feel truly alive.

TGS: If you could say one thing to a potential fan who’s on the fence about trying Starsand Island, what would it be?
Seed Sparkle Lab: If you’re feeling tired, overwhelmed, or simply looking for a warm place to slow down, we hope Starsand Island can be that gentle escape. There’s no pressure to play a certain way, just an invitation to live at your own pace, connect with others, and rediscover joy in the simple moments.
