Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls – Tier List for Launch Roster

In a Tag fighter like Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, tier lists are a great way to figure out who stands above the rest for team building. I’ve tested a good chunk of the cast personally, and combined with professional input and online performance, we’ll be looking at the very best characters to run if you want to climb ranked!

Of course, in a fighting game like Tokon, you can largely make anyone work if you put in the time and effort to learn matchups. This tier list is largely to avoid headaches, while showing off characters that are really worth putting the time into. I’ll even go into depth on a few really powerful options that have overperformed already.

For those who just want the graphic, here you go! This is a tier list I’ve made from sources, with tiers not necessarily ordered. We’ll go over a few from each category and why they stand out where they do.

    S-Tier Monsters

Characters that sit at the pinnacle of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Soul’s tier list are there for a multitude of different reasons, but they mostly stand in two distinct camps: powerful points and amazing assists. I’ll show some examples!

    Magik

Magik is an absolute frontline monster, boasting every tool you could ask for in a main character. She’s got great range, projectiles, mix, damage, and an Install that makes her a hundred times better at all of it. Magik is practically best in slot for getting the ball rolling, and she isn’t even that difficult to pilot.

A good part of the reason she’s so high is just how intuitive Magik feels to pilot. Her kit is simple and effective, with tools to match any opponent. Back her up with the right assists, and you’ve already got it in the bag.

    Green Goblin

The absolute sleeper winner of early Marvel Tokon, Green Goblin is a character most initially wrote off as a weird niche villain that would require more effort than he’s worth. Then came SonicFox and Inzem, two absolute fighting game monsters, former EVO champions, who have found that Goblin is an absolute mix machine.

Run him as your Assemble Shooter, get a knockdown with your Point character, get on the glider, and it’s Oki time. To be entirely fair, Green Goblin is a pretty high-execution character, but his strength is still flying under the radar, and when balance patches finally come, I don’t think Goblin is going to get touched for a good long while. If you want a real challenge you’ll get rewarded for, pick up Goblin!

    Blade

Blade is an almost required assist if you really want some easy wins, thanks to his solid assists and amazing mix setup. His Shooter is a great little projectile, his Vertical has stellar vertical range, and his Assault sets up crazy left-right situations all by itself.

By applying his assist alongside any kind of pressure, the enemy is forced to take some absolutely disgusting damage if they make even a single mistake. It helps that he’s solid enough that swapping him in to throw off the other player towards the end of the game is a great call.

    Midrange Menaces

I’d describe the majority of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls’ roster as ‘Midrange’, characters who can absolutely perform but may require a bit more effort. These characters are amazing in specific scenarios, but aren’t quite as everpresent at the upper echelons.

    Captain America

Mr. Straightforward himself, Captain America is shockingly simple, while still being a ton of fun to learn. His simple game plan can make him a bit easier to figure out, both for yourself and enemies, but Cap struggles to find a situation he suffers in.

Multiple projectile variants, an armor stance, a super solid meterless reversal, Cap really does have it all, as long as you’re willing to bring some of the sauce yourself. A great place to start!

    Wolverine

The opposite issue to Cap, Wolverine leans a bit too much into his niche and suffers the expected downsides. Wolverine is all about rushing the enemy down, tearing them apart at point-blank range. The issue is getting there in a game with strong universal reversal options and very powerful ranged characters.

IF Wolverine can corner the opponent, few can put on the pressure as he can, but his short range and stature make that more than a little difficult. Pair him with some strong Shooter assists to help him close the gap.

    Peni Parker

Peni is the ArcSys-mandated ‘random’ character, a gimmick they love, including at least one member of every roster they put out. Like Faust and Lowain before her, Peni’s pressure relies heavily on the random Spider-Bots she summons throughout the game.

She always has a chance to highroll, but a reliance on any kind of randomness in a fighting game severely limits the character’s consistent effectiveness. Peni has some decent tools outside of these random bots, but they help her hold down neutral in a way that forces you to engage with them more often than not.

She’s joined in B-tier by Ghost Rider and Deadpool, two characters that have a lot of potential, but need to try hard in a game where they can get run down fairly easily. If they reach their win-con, they’re very powerful; it just takes some extra effort to get there.

Weakest Links – Champion and Danger

Champion's Elbow in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls
    Image via TheGameSlayer/ArcSystemWorks

I’ll fully admit that I believe Danger’s lack of relevance in Tokon is because people just don’t care to play her. She’s an odd zoner who lacks a lot of the flair of other Tokon characters, so folks just haven’t given her the time of day. I can’t say she feels great, struggling in situations other long range characters execute off easier, with more options to keep aggressive foes back.

Meanwhile, Champion completely broke my heart. I’m a massive fan of the big frontline showman, an archetype well represented in ArcSys fighters. Azazel, Soriz, heroes and villains who swing hard and love the fight. They’re typically not the best, but they’re at least effective.

Champion breaks this mold by just being downright bad without some major effort that could otherwise be spent winning the game. Champion, uniquely, cannot make use of the Assemble Assist system while he’s Point. Full stop: Champion cannot call assists at all. Instead, he gains his own once he enters his Awakened state.

This Awakened state is only accessible via the slow process of filling his Pride gauge or landing a Tokon Assemble with him on point. Not only does the Pride gauge fill slowly, but it also drains if Champion is off the field, making it feel more like a desperate comeback mechanic that struggles to turn him into a real character.

These two are the only real stinkers in the Tokon roster, and both could seriously kick up some dirt if they get some love in post-launch balance patches. At current though, they lag behind hard in a game where most characters can be made great use of.

    Tokon’s Next Steps

All in all, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Soul’s tier lists show that the game is actually very solidly balanced, especially for a launch game. While strong heroes are noticeably strong, most characters can find their groove with enough practice and persistence.

Of course, that is if Tokon can manage to hold onto the player base who’s been slighted. The recent performance patch is a good first step, but it’ll take time to see if it takes route.
