Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced: How To Survive The Hurricane

Once Edward Kenway’s time masquerading as Duncan is over, he’ll be taken prisoner and chained up in the belly of a ship. Luckily, he and Adéwalé are able to escape before freeing the rest of the pirates and commandeering the Jackdaw. The bad news is a hurricane is coming, and its deadly.

The hurricane segment in the “This Tyro Captain” quest is one of the first major difficulty spikes in Resynced and is likely to scuttle many players who are trying to outrun the dangerous tempest. The good news is, we know how you can make it through in one piece.

When the storm segment begins, Edward will be at the helm of the Jackdaw, and Adéwalé will be ordering the crew. You’ll be attacked by two smaller vessels almost as soon as the action begins.

Our advice is to take these two down the moment you can, as it won’t be helpful to have them harassing you while you’re navigating the extreme weather – which is where the real difficulty lies.

Other ships will attack you later, but these won’t be that much of an issue as you’ll likely outrun them. You’ll also be dealing with the weather and likely won’t have time to stop and blast them with your cannons, but do so if you’re free of rogue waves and tornados.

How to survive rogue waves in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

Rogue Waves are massive swells that come towards you, and if you fail to handle them correctly, they’ll do massive damage to the ship’s hull and leave you vulnerable to any other dangers.

The good news is they are pretty easy to navigate and avoid damage. When a rogue wave comes towards you, simply sail at it head-on. Don’t try to avoid or sail around it, this is what will get you killed.

You may only see one rogue wave, which is scripted when Adéwalé says “the sea is trying to swallow us,” but others may spawn later in the segment. Just do the same thing, ram them to ride the wave and be free of damage.

This is where things get dicey and is likely to be the part that kills you. Waterspouts are essentially tornadoes made of water, and if you sail into one, it’ll do catastrophic damage to the ship. If anything else badly damaged you during the segment, like a rogue wave or a particularly heavy bombardment, failing this part of the segment will see you desynchronized for sure.

The waterspouts appear towards the end of the section and are very tough to avoid. If you try to navigate around them, you’ll bump into the edge of the map and get caught up in one, leading to death. So, our advice is to stay in the central point of the map and sail between the two tornadoes that are in the middle. If you time it right, neither will touch you, and you’ll make it safely to the other side.

The good news is you don’t actually have to sail the full distance that the compass marker tells you. When you’re about 400 metres from the destination, a cutscene will play, and you can breathe easy. So, once you make it past the watersprouts, go as fast as you can to clear this rather difficult section of the game. You’ll soon arrive in Nassau – where it’s time to have some fun.

You’ll come across rogue waves and waterspouts later in the game, just repeat some of the tactics here and you’ll survive the uncaring sea and avoid sinking into Davey Jones’ locker.
