Gothic 1 Remake – The Baloro’s Weapon Quest Explained

Baloro’s quest in the Gothic 1 remake can be a bit of a headscratcher. It basically involves you fetching a bunch of items for the NPC, and in return he’ll give you a powerful weapon. The only issue is that there is no weapon and Baloro is a scammer who just wants you to bring him free food.

Below, we’ll walk you through this quest and tell you the options that are open to you when it comes to dealing with Baloro. There are multiple ways to complete this quest, and not all of them involve actually doing as he asks.

You’ll meet Baloro by the huts near the Free Mine, and he’ll offer to trade you food in exchange for a new weapon. Perceptive and sceptical players may feel like his reward is too good to be true, and you’ll be presented with dialogue choices to reflect this.

If you agree to Baloro’s arrangement, he’ll send you to go and bring him the following food items:

    • 5x Apples
    • 2x Rice Schnapps
    • 5x Beers
    • 3x Breads
    • 2x Cheeses
    • 2x Grapes

If you locate these items and return to him with them, he’ll thank you for your help, but then he’ll laugh at the player for being so gullible and tell you no weapon ever existed.

You’ll complete the quest, but there will be no reward. Some players may be tempted to attack Baloro in retribution for his scam, but this will count as assault, and you’ll be subject to the usual penalties. So if you do, make sure to initiate the dialogue so that he attacks you first.

So, if you have been swindled by Baloro, it’s better to just take the L. Just maybe take care of the scammer later when you’re more powerful or during the chaos that follows after the mine collapse. Nobody will care then, and you’ll still get a completed quest.

Should you track down items for Baloro?

If you want to have a completed quest log, then sure, do the quest, understanding there’s no reward. But our advice is not to bother.

If you show any scepticism towards Baloro during your exchange, he’ll get upset and attack you. You’ll fail the quest, but who cares? There’s no reward anyway. You’ll also be free to defend yourself against him, and nobody will care if you beat down Baloro after he attacks you.

The main issue is that you need to be able to take him on. If you’re confident that you can beat him in a fight, then call Baloro out on his scam and fight him. If you’re still a low level and know you can’t beat him, either do the quest or avoid speaking to him until you’re powerful enough to take him on.

You can accept the quest and then return to Baloro and call him out. This means the quest will still be logged, but it won’t be completed. However, in our view, you have better things to be doing in Gothic than finding free food for a scammer.
