You can see the massive World Tree in Subnautica 2 towering over the ocean almost anywhere on the surface of the water. While we covered the Tree in our Leviathan guide, the huge creature is not technically one of their number; it’s something else, just as vast, but arguably far more important.
Below, we’ll explain what the World Tree is and if you can reach it in the current, early access version of Subnautica 2 – and finally, if you have anything to fear from this big, overgrown plant in the middle of the sea.
Can you reach the World Tree in Subnautica 2?
Yes, kind of. You can swim over to the World Tree in Subnautica 2, but you can’t do much once you’re there. The World Tree is located in a region of the ocean called Xanadu, which is currently inaccessible (for the most part).
The Tree is also not a sneaky Leviathan lying in wait to eat you; it’s literally a non-hostile alien water-tree and is of huge ecological importance to all life on Proteus.
As you may have guessed already, the World Tree is going to be an important part of the Subnautica 2 story and itself, and the region of Xanadu is likely being saved for a future content update.
What is the World Tree in Subnautica 2?

While the World Tree serves as just a big, ominous mega-flora while you’re playing the game, it becomes more important once you restore power to the alien Power Plant and trigger the ending of the early access story.
The player will be greeted by a message from the missing (potentially extinct) alien Axum species, who tell the player that the World Tree is essential to healing the planet and that its roots have become rotten due to an unknown ailment.
The aliens implore the player to travel to the tree and save it from whatever threat is there and causing it harm. They also warn that the player is in for a fight once they arrive. Then, the early access story abruptly ends with a thank you message from the dev team.
If you then try to travel back to the World Tree, nothing happens, and you’re greeted with the same invisible walls from before. This leads us to believe that the World Tree will be a major focus of the first Subnautica 2 expansion, and that we’ll need to wait until then to learn more about it.
So as of right now, you can’t really do much with the World Tree in Subnautica, but you probably will be able to at some point in the future. However, it also means you can rest assured that it absolutely, categorically, doesn’t want to eat you. At least, not yet.
