Pokémon ROM Hacks offer players fresh, community-made takes on one of the most influential IPs on the planet. Most are made using the GBA games as a platform, which makes sense given the love for those nostalgic titles.
There are literally thousands of Pokémon ROM Hacks available to download. While you’ll never be without something to play, it’s easy to suffer from choice paralysis, especially if you’re new to the genre. With this in mind, here’s a list of superb ROM Hacks which showcase just how good fan-made content can be.
My goal with this list is to recommend games that anyone dipping their toes into ROM Hacks for the first time will enjoy. Many of these titles are on the easier side, but I’ve also included a couple of tougher options for wannabe Pokémon masters who find the vanilla games too easy.
The hardest part about writing a list like this is picking just ten, so don’t be offended if I’ve not included your favorites! If you’re a veteran ROM Hack fan, check out our list of the best titles from 2025.

Pokémon Lazarus
A Charming Adventure In GBC Style

Many of the best Pokémon ROM Hacks let players explore brand new regions. Lazarus does, too, although it’s unique as its Ilios region is based on Greece.
Another remarkable aspect of this ROM Hack is its aesthetic choice. Lazarus is a GBA Emerald hack, but it looks like a GBC game, which is far less common. This title offers a snappy roster of over 400 Pokémon picked from Gen I to Gen IX.
Lazarus is a little tougher than the mainline games, but it offers two difficulty modes and even has built-in cheats if you get really stuck. If you’re tired of the typical GameBoy Advance visuals, Lazarus is a no-brainer.

Pokémon Unbound
The Quintessential Pokémon ROM Hack

I almost feel cheeky adding Pokémon Unbound to the list, as so many people know about it. However, if I could only recommend a single title to show off ROM Hacks to someone who’s never played, this would be it.
The Unbound experience is so high-quality that you would think a paid studio created it. It hits the same game play beats you’d expect in a mainline Pokémon game but offers so much more. The world map is exemplary, with unique locales that make the new Borrius Region feel alive.
I adore the Gym gimmicks in Unbound, which make battles against leaders far more exciting. For example, the first Gym is enveloped in a thick fog, which lowers accuracy. It can be a hellish battleground unless you figure out a way around the problem.
Unbound boasts over 900 Pokémon from Gen I up to Gen VII, customizable difficulty settings, and a surprisingly well-written story. The only downside of playing it first is that so many other ROM hacks are lacking by comparison.

Pokémon Dreams
A Personal Favorite

Pokémon Dreams is a personal favorite of mine, and one of the few I’ve beaten multiple times. Dreams is an easier ROM Hack than most, but it begs for repeat playthroughs with a roster of over 800 Pokémon.
The title also features a small selection of ‘Fakemon,’ which are fan-made creatures. Honestly, Fakemon are a bit like Marmite within the ROM Hack community, but you can mostly avoid them in Dreams if you’re not a fan.
Pokémon Dreams is set in the new Solda region. Team Coil wants to awaken the ‘Sky Snake Pokémon’ to assume power, and it’s up to you to stop them. I adore the antagonists, as it’s a brother/sister duo with entirely different ways of conducting business.
Dreams has a bit of everything, and you will meet the ‘System Sisters’ at the start of the game, who allow you to add sweeping modifiers to your entire adventure.

Pokémon Heart & Soul
A Fun And Familiar Return To Johto And Kanto

Pokémon Heart & Soul is perfect for beginners who adored the older original titles and want an excuse to fall in love with Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal all over again.
Heart & Soul is one of the newest ROM Hacks on this list and offers a curated experience from the GBC games, but is built on the foundations of Pokémon Emerald. The title boasts endgame content you can find in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, but with tons of QoL features, like Pokémon that follow you on the map.
If you’re on the fence about trying ROM Hacks, Heart & Soul is a great place to start. It captures the magic of the mainline games and allows you to explore the Johto and Kanto regions.
6
Pokémon Blazed Glazed
A Grand Pokémon Adventure Spanning Three Regions

Pokémon Blazed Glazed is one of the first ROM Hacks I played and offers mountains of content, including three expansive regions.
The difficulty in Blazed Glazed is firm but fair and isn’t much more challenging than the mainline GBA games. On that note, the ROM Hack gives you five starters to pick from and a huge Pokedex from Gen I to Gen V.
The story and characters are decent, and there’s plenty of endgame content, which many ROM Hacks tend to ignore. There’s also a hilarious side plot with an irate Pikachu, which I won’t spoil here.
Pokémon Blazed Glazed has a bit of everything, and it drops an EXP Share and a pair of Running Shoes at your feet at the start. It will take even the best trainers ages to conquer three regions and the epilogue content, so this is a stacked ROM Hack to start with.
5
Pokémon Gaia
A Firm But Fair ROM Hack Classic

Pokémon Gaia is another well-known ROM Hack, but there’s a reason the community still holds it in high regard, even though it was last updated in 2018.
Gaia is set in the Orbtus region, where strange seismic activity has authorities scratching their heads at the cause. Naturally, it’s up to you to figure out the source of the tremors and who, or what, is behind them.
One thing you’ll quickly realize is that Pokémon Gaia is light on puzzles, offering a more combat-centric experience. There are at least 700 Pokémon up for grabs around Orbtus, and the map itself feels fresh, with an original soundtrack.
I debated putting Pokémon Gaia on the list, as many battles are notably more challenging than the mainline games. However, the difficulty curve feels surmountable, and forces you to think about your strategies without requiring encyclopedic knowledge of the move pool.

Pokémon Exceeded
A Unique Battle System Done Right

I’m wary of Pokémon games that try to reinvent the wheel. Oftentimes, ROM Hack creators have ideas that sound great on paper, but aren’t so impressive in practice.
Exceeded is an exception to this rule, in my opinion. The ROM Hack isn’t dramatically different from Pokémon Emerald, but it has a unique ‘Innate Ability’ system which breathes life into the classic title.
Every Pokémon you meet has Innate abilities, which act similarly to regular abilities, like Sturdy. The system is exceptionally fleshed out, and Innates can chain together with downright broken combinations.
The Innate system is enough for me to recommend Pokémon Exceeded, but the game is heavily customizable and even features a built-in Nuzlocke mode if you crave challenge.
3
Pokémon Fire Red Rocket Edition
Villains Have All The Fun

Staying on the topic of ROM Hacks with unique ideas, Pokémon Fire Red Rocket Edition offers something you won’t find elsewhere.
Pokémon Red and Blue put you in the shoes of a heroic trainer on their journey to defeat Team Rocket and become the league champion. Fire Red Rocket Edition takes place at the same time, only this time, you play as one of the bad guys.
You can steal Pokémon in this ROM Hack and climb the ranks of the criminal underworld. You’ll also see many events from the original games from a unique perspective and quickly realize that life in Kanto is not all sunshine and rainbows.
Fire Red Rocket Edition flips the usual Pokémon formula on its head. It’s not for everyone, but it offers an unforgettable experience of life as a villain.
2
Pokémon Dreamstone Mysteries
One Of The Best ROM Hacks Of 2025

I took a gamble with Pokémon Dreamstone Mysteries, as I heard little buzz around the title. What I didn’t expect was a charming experience I have no qualms recommending to ROM Hack beginners or veterans alike.
Dreamstone Mysteries is set in the original region of Cormoria. Many staples of typical Pokémon games are here, but the story is involved, and the title is surprisingly pretty to boot.
The regional Pokedex offers a compact mix of creatures from multiple generations, but the part that impressed me the most is its quality-of-life features.
You can make Dreamstone Mysteries as straightforward or challenging as you like. There’s even the option to have infinite Rare Candies if you get stuck. Still not impressed? You can even have your follower Pokémon act like a mobile Pokémon Center.

Pokémon Sors
A Grand Story Spanning Multiple Games

Most Pokémon ROM Hacks are one-and-done titles that closely follow the award-winning formula of the originals. If you like the idea of a grand story in its own unique universe where Pokémon are still the driving force, you may enjoy Pokémon Sors.
Pokémon Sors is one of the titles in Vytron’s ‘Vytroverse’ series. The game is set in the new Hupest region, boasting more than 700 Pokémon. Sors also introduces ‘Eclipse’ Pokémon to the roster, which are integral to the story.
The visuals in Pokémon Sors are fantastic, as is the region design and soundtrack. Lore enthusiasts will appreciate the story, and the title ties into other games in the Vytroverse: Sors 2, Saiph, and Saiph 2. Pokémon Saiph is technically the first game in the Vytroverse, but I found it a little rough around the edges, hence the recommendation for Pokémon Sors.
