How To Create Vassals In EU5

While trying to expand your territory, it could get difficult to manage all your new regions at a glance. That’s where you need to create loyal subject nations, called Vassals, to carry out your role. Vassals offer an important role in acting as a buffer during times of unrest. If you are unsure of how to create Vassals in Europa Universalis 5, then this guide has it covered.

To create a Vassal, press F5 to bring up the Diplomacy tab, then click on the “Create Subject” option on the right side of the menu. Then, select a section of your Empire that you wish to turn into a Vassal to send a noble from your rule to govern the new nation.

This is also the menu you need to return to if you wish to annex the Vassal from your rule. If you click on Manage Subjects, you get a list of all Vassals under your control. Use this to decide which nations are more profitable to you and manage your relations with them, or let go of the ones that aren’t.

    Benefits of Vassals

Vassals are a great way to gain control of a region when proximity is not in your favor. While building roads can offer better proximity, during the early game, you might depend more on Vassals for control. Also, obtaining Vassals is a great way to monopolize resources, especially food, that you would otherwise not own, purchase, or produce within your nation.

Another great use of a Vassal is to act as a buffer between you and your neighboring states, especially if you don’t have good ties with them. During times of war, if you had created a Vassal near your borders, then they would take the majority of the burden. Vassals will also supply taxes to your nation, increase prestige income, and support institutions for research.

    Maintaining Vassals

While Vassals will fall under your general rule, the longer you stay uninterested in their affairs, the faster they will fall into dispute. Heading to the Manage Subjects tab will help you improve relations and maintain loyalty with them, and govern them a bit better.

Smaller nations that require governing and assistance will be easier to manage than larger Vassals that have more autonomy. Enforcing your culture on them will reduce their liberty, which also helps maintain Vassals efficiently. Also, keep a tab on your diplomatic capacity, as excessive subjects will lead to penalties. If you are losing control over your Vassal, then the best course of action would be to annex them.

    Vassals or Fiefdoms?

The only stark difference between the two is the culture and government. Both of these terms are used interchangeably and offer the same concept while trying to extend your power over other states. Fiefdoms work under Monarchy rule, and you can attain Fiefdoms within states that have the same religion and culture as your Empire. Fiefdoms are created the same way as Vassals, under the Diplomacy tab.

Vassals, on the other hand, are more flexible to obtain, as they can fall under any government and culture. But, since Fiefdoms are very similar to the main Empire, you might have an easier time maintaining them and keeping them happier than Vassals. Vassals, on the other hand, are a great way to advance research through institutions and also work on your Prestige.

Depending on your government and your economic needs, going for Vassals or Fiefdoms will impact your nation in a good way. Now that you know how to create Vassals in Europa Universalis 5, check out our other guides on How To Fix Unprofitable Buildings, and How To Increase Crown Power.
