The Emotional Rescue update in Disney Dreamlight Valley now brings two beloved Inside Out characters, Joy and Sadness. You need to go through a series of quests after unlocking their realm to bring them to the valley. First, we will go ahead and start working on bringing Joy, and this guide will cover how to unlock Joy in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
How to Unlock the Inside Out Realm and Get Joy in Disney Dreamlight Valley
Head up to the top floor of Dream Castle and interact with the only blocked portal, which unlocks by spending 15,000 Dreamlight. You can’t enter it immediately, rather, you need to activate incomplete memories to unlock the character. Pick up the memory that falls on the floor after unlocking the portal and hand it over to Merlin standing nearby.
He will tell you that the memory will be completed after obtaining Joy and Sadness. Joy is unlocked by cooking any dish, and Sadness is obtained by taking a picture of a Night Thorn. The memory will be completed, hand it over to Merlin to start the Emotional Rescue quest.
Emotional Rescue Quest Guide
You are now able to enter the Inside Out Realm and speak to Joy, which starts the task to help her repair her console. There are 5 missing console parts to locate, and they are found all around the room you are currently in. The locations you need to check are:

| Curiosity Adjuster | At the base of the ramp beside the crafting station. |
| Broken Caution Connectors | Check behind the ramp to find a pink carpeted walkway. The part is located right in the middle of this passage. |
| Envy Button | Turn left after exiting the pink passage to find it on the ground, next to a wall. |
| Curiosity Sliders | Check behind the red couch near the console. |
Before making your way back to the console to repair it, combine the Broken Grip and Connectors at the crafting table to get Caution Sliders. Then, head back and insert all four items within the console to have it working again. Speak to Joy and she has another task for you, which is to realign the flippers of the routing controls and have the long term memories flowing again. There are two controls to check here, within the front and back rooms, and below are the solutions.
- Front Routing Solution – Press the left button first to turn both green flippers vertical, then press the right button to turn all flippers horizontal.
- Back Routing Solution – Press the left button first followed by the right button next to flip all flippers horizontally.
Solving this will bring you closer to the end of this quest, but you still won’t get to unlock Joy unless you have unlocked Sadness. Your next task is to locate Sadness within the Long Term Memory, which starts Sadness’ questline called Out of the Blue. Completing that will bring you back to Joy for the final step in unlocking her.
Dream On Quest Guide
After unlocking Sadness, both her and Joy will work on helping Riley overcome her stage fright in time to perform in her school’s talent show. This will unlock a Dream Production North, where you need to set it up first with the right furniture so Joy and Sadness get to work filming you. Enter Furniture Mode and start shifting all the Elegant gold-trimmed furniture from the left side of the screen towards the stage. The items Joy requires are:
- Globe
- Fireplace
- Potted plant
Place the above three pieces of furniture anywhere on the stage to get the next objective, which is to dress up like a pianist. Head into your wardrobe and filter out all Elegant clothing and wear outfits with the Elegant tag. Next, interact with the piano on stage and watch the cutscene. Once back at the HQ, Joy will inform you that the video that they had filmed of you is bad, and will head over to Dreamlight Valley to work on something else.
Unlock Joy in Disney Dreamlight Valley
Follow her back to the Valley, after which you get to unlock the Emotions’ Headquarters for 10,000 Star Coins. Once built, Joy will join your base, adding her as a new character to your Disney roster. Her questline doesn’t end yet, she needs your help building a Light Stick to cheer Riley on. Collect the following materials and report to Joy once done.

Hand over all the items to Joy to craft the Go Go Glow Light Stick, which completes Joy’s questline and adds her as a character in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
