Sony unveiled the PS5 Pro today and announced 7th November 2024 as the official release date for the console. The most updated and technically proficient console from Sony yet will launch at a price point of 699$, and comes without a disc drive. The console however has a provision to attach a disc drive that will need to be purchased separately.
The details were announced on a live stream by Mark Cerny, the Lead Architect for PS5 and he went through how a better GPU, advanced ray-tracing and AI-driven upscaling make this a significant upgrade to the PS5. The details were also put up on the PS blog which talks about these three key features in more detail:
- Upgraded GPU: The GPU in PS5 Pro will come with 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory, which translates into a 45% faster rendering for gameplay, resulting in a smoother gaming experience.
- Advanced Ray Tracing: Even more powerful ray tracing allows rays to be cast at double, and sometimes triple the speed of the current PS5 console, providing a richer dynamic reflection and refraction of light.
- AI-driven Upscaling: This is the first time PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution has been used in a PS console. This is driven by machine-learning technology that helps provide super sharp image clarity with significantly rich level of detailing.
All this comes with a height and width similar to the existing PS5 console, but then to be fair the current PS5 console also comes with a disc drive attached.
Another announcement that should come as a major incentive for prospective buyers is the PS5 Pro Game Boost which will stabilize or likely improve the performance of PS4 and PS5 games. Additionally, this feature is going to be applicable to a staggering 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games that can be experienced on PS5 Pro.
There will also be games that will get patched with free software updates and will come with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label on the title, and includes games like Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7, Spider-Man 2 among others.
The inclusions will have
- 2 TB SSD.
- Dual Sense wireless controller.
- Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.
While the launch will be on 7th November, pre-orders will open up September 26, 2024. Prices including tax are 699 $/ 799 EUR/ 119980 JPY.
