Umamusume: Pretty Derby requires you to properly train your horse girls in order to win races. One important factor that affects how the training will go is your trainee’s mood. This not only affects how well she trains, but also plays a role in performance during a race.

This guide will explain all the mood levels in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, their in-game effects, how they change, and how to manage them to get the best performance out of your trainees.

Every Umamusume trainee has a mood meter that is active throughout their training runs and races. The mood system features five levels, ranging from great to awful. Each tier offers specific buffs or debuffs to training efficiency and race-day performance. Here’s how they work:

    Great Mood

This is the highest mood level. When your trainee is in a great mood, she receives a 20% boost in training efficiency and 4% increase in race attributes. It also significantly improves skill activation chances during races.

    Good Mood

This is the second-best state and still highly beneficial. A good mood grants a 10% training efficiency boost and 2% increase in race attributes, which helps in maintaining progress even if it’s not as powerful as a great mood.

    Normal Mood

The default state for most characters at the start of a training session or run. In a normal mood, there are no bonuses or penalties, and your trainee performs at base level in both training and races.

    Bad Mood

Once a trainee falls into this level, performance begins to drop. A bad mood causes a 10% decrease in training efficiency and 2% reduction in race attributes. Skill activation also becomes less reliable during a bad mood.

    Awful Mood

This is the lowest possible mood. It results in a 20% drop in training effectiveness and a 4% reduction in racing stats, severely weakening your trainee’s ability to progress and compete. Skills often fail to trigger at this stage, and it becomes difficult to recover without proper planning.

Mood can shift frequently during a training run, depending on your decisions and the game’s random events. In Casual Races, the mood level is determined randomly based on the chosen character. On the other hand, in URA Career Runs, it’s affected by several controllable and uncontrollable factors.

    Causes of Mood Decline

    • Failed Training Sessions: The most common reason for mood drops. This usually happens when a trainee attempts training with low energy. When energy is low, the chance of success can fall as low as 30–40%.
    • Random Negative Events: Certain in-game story or support events can lower mood unexpectedly.
    • Poor Dialogue Choices: Some events give you the option to respond. Choosing responses that ignore well-being or health may negatively impact mood.
    • Overtraining: Ignoring rest or recreation increases the risk of failed training, which leads to mood drops.

Because mood directly affects both stat gains and race-day performance, even a single training failure can drop a great mood down to bad or worse, so energy and timing must always be monitored.

Keeping your trainee in a good or great mood is essential for consistent performance. Fortunately, the game provides multiple ways to boost or recover mood levels, especially when things aren’t going your way.

    Recreation

One of the best tools for mood management. Taking a recreation session instead of regular training:

    • Restores a portion of energy.
    • Has a high chance of increasing mood, often by one or even two levels.
    • Can prevent burnout from consecutive trainings.

However, be cautious during choice-based recreation events as picking the wrong option can slightly reduce mood.

    Parfaits

Parfaits are consumable items that can instantly improve your trainee’s mood. These are especially useful before key races or training sessions where every stat gain matters. They can be obtained through:

    • Daily missions
    • Support events
    • Special events or rewards

Parfaits are very helpful in Casual Races, where you don’t control mood at the start but can boost it quickly before the race begins.

    Support Card Events

Training alongside support characters sometimes triggers special support events. Many of these have mood-boosting outcomes, especially if you have high friendship levels with the support card. These events can provide:

    • Stat boosts
    • Energy recovery
    • Mood improvement
    • Special training bonuses

    Dialogue Choices

During various story events, you’ll often be prompted to select from multiple responses. Always choose options that mention:

    • Health
    • Rest
    • Mind or mental care

These lead to positive mood changes, helping your Umamusume recover from negative events or prevent future drops.
