Playing with Fire Quest Guide Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

You can pick up the Playing with Fire quest in Cuanacht, after unlocking Act 2. In Cuanacht’s lower city, head north and explore the alleyways till you come across some guards trying to knock down a house’s door. Decide to investigate the scene, then convince the soldiers to step aside so you can investigate the case yourself. You will then be asked to speak to Denholm, who happens to be their captain.
To find Denholm, you need to make your way to the northern section of the upper city. Cross over the bridge and head up the large garrison to find the captain. Convince the captain to relieve his men from the investigation and hand it over to you instead. Then, head back to the house they were trying to break in, which is home to Firkel the mad inventor. The soldiers there will warn you that Firkel wishes to burn down the garrison, but you can’t conclude the investigation without talking to him first.
Head inside and listen to what Firkel has to say, after which you can decide whether you want to side with him or the captain.
Side with Denholm

While speaking to Firkel, tell him that you know he conducted a dangerous experiment that will risk several lives. He will not deny it, but will blame the soldiers for stealing an important component that will stabilize the invention. Be supportive of his experiment and ask him some compelling questions to keep the conversation going.
Choosing to accuse Firkel outright will have him clam up, and you won’t get anymore insights on what went down. After the conversation is over, return to Denholm and choose the option that Firkel is a dangerous man. This will lead to the execution of Firkel, but he does tell you to take everything in his house before it is all gone.
Side with Firkel

If listening to Firkel has changed your mind, then you can visit Denholm and choose two new dialog choices. You can either claim that Firkel is innocent, or blame Denholm’s men for tampering with the experiment. If you say he is innocent, Denholm will send Firkel to Kamalot to conduct all his future experiments. Firkel will then leave his house to you, and you can stay here for as long as you like.
If, instead, you choose to blame Denholm’s men, then he will take pity on Firkel and accept your decision. Firkel gets to stay in Cuanacht, and he will set up shop while allowing you to use his house. You can check his wares and purchase items for a discounted price. He offers a couple of very interesting potions and miscellaneous items that will be of some use to you.
Which Option Should You Pick
For the best choice, we let Denholm’s men take the blame for Firkel’s failed experiment. This allows Firkel to open up his store to you while you explore Cuanacht, and you also get to live in his house and loot his goods. Plus, you can also purchase several special consumables that offer some unique bonus effects that can come in handy while exploring the later sections of Cuanacht.
