Title Update 4 for Monster Hunter Wilds has finally arrived with weapon buffs, performance improvement, and most excitedly, the game’s very first Elder Dragon: Gogmazios.
The Specter of War lies behind two quick quests and boasts one of the hardest fights to grace Monster Hunter Wilds.
Below you’ll find a guide for how to unlock the fight, how to best Gogmazios, and what to use those fresh materials on.
Finding Gogmazios

In order to fight Gogmazios, players will need to talk to the marked NPC in the Oilwell Basin. This will lead to a short investigation where Werner leads the group deeper into the Basin. Suddenly, Erik notices a shifting black form, none other than a sleeping Gogmazios.
The towering beast is currently completely out cold, so Werner recommends alerting the rest of the unit and building up defenses around it while it sleeps. This leads to a second quest, where the player is told that Gogmazios has mysteriously vanished.

Returning to its original resting spot will trigger a cutscene where Gogmazios ambushes the party. All seems lost until Nadia, a returning Hunter, wounds the beast and gives the player an opening. From here, the quest proper begins, and you’re left face-to-face with Gogmazios.
If you plan on doing the quest with friends, return to camp here, and you’ll find a repeatable version of the quest offered at the quest counter.
Fighting Gogmazios Phase 1

Gogmazios is among the hardest-hitting Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds. To minimize time spent scrambling for cover, bringing the right elemental weapons is paramount.
Gogmazios is unique in having two separate elemental weakness tables it switches between repeatedly during the fight. When the battle begins, Gogmazios is coated in thick oil that has hardened to cover its hide. This oil needs to be removed by attacking with Fire element weapons.
Dealing enough damage to a part will cause the oil encasing it to melt, making it more vulnerable to Gogmazios’ true weakness, Dragon element. Eventually, the oil will cool, forcing you to switch back to Fire element in order to soften it again. This pattern repeats over the entire fight, making a loadout with one Dragon element and one Fire element weapon ideal.

Throughout the fight striking the glowing blue segments of technology buried in Gogmazio’s hide will drop Compact Anti-Wyvern Guns. This unique slinger ammo can be charged to deal decent damage to vulnerable areas and become crucial in later phases.
After fighting Gogmazios for a time on the ground, it will start rampaging, flooding the arena in lava. Players will need to climb up a nearby cliff and draw Gogmazios near, leading to the fight’s second phase.
Fighting Gogmazios Phase 2

Now, with Gogmazios leering over the party, Hunters will need to strike Gogmazios with the Oilwell Basin’s Great Furnace, activated with a nearby lever. The Great Furnace has a long cooldown, so focus on striking at Gogmazios’ wing arms to stagger it before attempting the lever.
Striking Gogmazios with the Great Furnace will down it properly, allowing Hunters to strike at the massive cannon stuck to its back, the Elderbreaker. Knocking the cannon free will see it tumble onto the cliff, prompting Hunters to connect three cables of Wyvernmilk to it.
Hunters carrying the cables are heavily slowed, but have access to a dive with plenty of invulnerability frames. Have a few Hunters distract Gogmazios while the others get the Elderbreaker online.

Once the three cables are connected, the Elderbreaker will begin to charge, starting at 60% and building up to 100%. It may be tempting to fire it immediately, but waiting for the charge nearly doubles the cannon’s damage, speeding up the final phase.
Wait until Gogmazios is stunned and fire the cannon, dealing upwards of 80k damage and permanently punching a hole in the beast’s armor. It will attempt to escape upwards, where Hunters can follow on their Seikrats to enter the arena for the final phase.
Fighting Gogmazios Phase 3

Gogmazios will meet the party at the apex of the Oilwell Basin, high above the clouds of smoke and sulfur. This phase opens with the dragon using its wings to stay out of the party’s reach, leaving it vulnerable to the Compact Anti-Wyvern Guns it continues to drop.
Landing enough shots will cause Gogmazios to crash, after which it will attempt to take off with one wing. Focusing fire on that wing will force Gogmazios to the ground fully, opening it up to weapon attacks.
During this phase, Gogmazios repeatedly enters and exits Gaseous State, where its attacks become enhanced, and it fully sheds the oily coat it was covered in. After a few cycles, Gogmazios will prepare a massive volcanic attack, causing plumes of magma to appear and superheat the center of the arena.
If the party has dealt enough damage, Fabius will run to a corner of the arena before raising his shield, providing cover from the worst of the attack. If you can’t make it to Fabius, blocking with your own weapon or running to the scattered high ground will also work.

After the final burst, Gogmazios will take flight, repeating the cycle until either it or the party falls. The fight plays similarly to Monster Hunter World’s Alatreon encounter, only with more lenient damage thresholds to avoid a wipe.
Post Gogmazios

With Gogmazios vanquished, you’ll have plenty of new materials to gather, both from Gogmazios’ usual pool, as well as Gogma Parts. Gogma Parts are used to upgrade Artian weapons into Gogma Artian weapons.
This upgrade requires three of a single type of Gogma Part used to focus on Raw damage, Element, or Affinity, slightly lowering the two not chosen.
You can also use Gogmazios’ materials on its armor set, a very strong set sporting a unique form of the Agrivator skill that stacks with the base form. Both the alpha and beta sets share the same decoration slots, instead offering different group skills, making the choice up to player preference.
