Rust is a tough survival game, where everything is out to kill you. You are free to build your defenses and try to last one more day. You get to locate and build items to help you improve your shelter, and one of the newer items added to the game is the Chicken Coop. The chicken coop lets you own chickens and farm them for food, and this guide will cover how to get and use a chicken coop in Rust.
How To Get The Chicken Coop In Rust

You can craft the Chicken Coop in Rust by unlocking the blueprint, and then collecting 200 * Wood. To unlock the blueprint, follow these steps:
- Upgrade your Workbench to level 1
- Research the Water Bucket blueprint. This requires 20x Scraps to unlock.
- Next, research the Large Planter Blueprint. You can now unlock the Chicken Coop Blueprint.
It will cost 20x Scraps more for each blueprint unlock, making it a grand total of 60x Scraps to unlock all three blueprints. Once you have the blueprint, all that is left is to get to your base and place the structure on your selected area. It will take 200x Wood to craft 1x Chicken Coop, and you can place it on any flat surface like the grass or a foundation.
How To Use The Chicken Coop In Rust
Before you can start farming chickens, you need to collect eggs. You can get eggs by exploring the overworld for chickens, then chase them to collect eggs. Another way to get eggs is to trade with other players. After collecting your eggs, make your way back to the coop and place the eggs under the Controls menu and click on the Hatch option.
It will take a few seconds for your eggs to hatch, after which you can raise chickens around your compound. Chickens will lay eggs, and you can collect these eggs for consumption or hatch more chickens. 1 chicken will lay 1 egg every 2 minutes.
How To Take Care of Chickens

Keeping your chickens in good health will restore their HP and help them produce eggs. There are four main stats that help in keeping your chickens happy. When you interact with a chicken by selecting it, you will find stats for Food, Water, Happiness, and Sunlight. Below is what each stat means and how to increase it.
- Food: You can place food in the Chicken Coop menu, and food like grubs, bread, apples, and other produce can keep them fed.
- Water: Supplying a water source keeps your chickens hydrated, and you can add water to the Chicken Coop menu.
- Happiness: While interacting with a chicken, you get an option to pet it, which keeps it happy.
- Sunlight: Keeping your chickens out in the open can increase the Sunlight stat, but they can become easy targets to other players passing by.
You can also check the stats of your chickens in the Chicken Coop menu, and on top of the right section, you can view all your chickens and unhatched eggs as well as the stats. Chickens are not the only new additions to the Rust update, as you can also have bees, and we have a guide exclusively on getting rid of bees in Rust.
