There is always that one item in every survival game like 7 Days to Die which seems like a tough task to obtain in the early game but becomes a breeze to get later. Forged Iron is one such resource that can be used to craft a whole bunch of items, effectively opening up entirely new possibilities. However, getting Forged Iron in 7 Days to Die takes effort and some decent progression.

Forged Iron can be salvaged from broken Workbenches, vending machines, cement mixers, chem stations, etc by using a Wrench, Impact Driver, or Ratchet. Be very careful with vending machines in working condition though as trying to salvage them may lead to you getting zapped.

Sometimes you can also find Forged Iron in 7 Days to Die in certain crates like the ones found inside foundry buildings or inside Working Stiff crates. However, this will only yield one maybe two ingots of Forged Iron which doesn’t help you much unless you are very early in the game and cannot afford to craft Forged Iron. If you want a lot of Forged Iron, it is much better to craft it than trying to consistently source it from loot containers and such.

To craft Forged Iron you need to smelt Iron and Clay together in a Forge. You can get Iron by smelting things with iron in the Forge like Short Iron Pipes and Clay can be obtained by mining a Lump of Clay from the ground and then smelting it in the Forge. This will also require some tools at hand like a shovel and pickaxe to be able to dig and mine for these resources.

You will also require a combustible fuel source like Coal which can be mined from Coal Ore veins, chopping down burnt trees, or more rarely from containers or Zombie drops. It can also spawn inside metal works buildings. But all of this is going to require a Forge if you don’t already have one then you need to focus on crafting a Forge first or finding one at a Trader Outpost.

How to Unlock and Build a Forge in 7 Days to Die

The Forge in 7 Days to Die can be unlocked by collecting five Forge Ahead Adventure Magazines. Once you have that, you can then build a Forge using the following material:

    • Cobblestone Rocks x50
    • Wood Log x1
    • Leather x10
    • Duct Tape x3
    • Short Iron Pipe x3

Forges can also spawn in Trader Outposts and are usable by the player. But you should make your own forge as soon as you can because using one at a trader requires lots of traveling back and forth, having it on demand and near your storage at the base is way more helpful.

You can also pick up a Forge and take it with you to another place as long as it is empty and owned by you. Also, remember that a Forge once turned on will continue burning until it is turned off manually. Additionally, it will also attract zombies due to the heat it produces the longer it is kept turned on.

Sometimes if it is kept turned on for long periods, it can accumulate enough heat on the Heatmap to attract Screamer Zombies. So whenever you decide to use a Forge be attentive to the smelting process and how long it takes to smelt certain items as you need to turn off the Forge after the smelting is done instead of letting it burn and attract zombies to your base.
