Saturas is crucial to the story in Gothic; he’s the leader of the water mages and is someone the player will need to meet and befriend, regardless of the camp they choose to join. Saturas has little interest in the petty powerplays and politics of the various camps; he’s far more interested in escaping the colony and bringing down the dangerous magical barrier.
Below, we’ll reveal the location of Saturas in the Gothic 1 Remake, his importance, and the various quests, and what you can do to gain an audience with him. Finally, we’ll reveal the character’s ultimate fate. So, understand that this guide will contain spoilers. Now, here’s where you can find Saturas of the water mages in Gothic.
Saturas location in Gothic

Saturas is located in the New Camp as the leader of the water mages. He’s locked away in his quarters, and all his effort goes into using his powers to find a way to escape the barrier, which is what others admire him or laugh at him for.
Meeting Saturas depends on the camp you joined. If you joined the Swamp Camp, then Cor Angar will send you to talk with the New Camp to join forces the escape plan.
If you’re already a member of New Camp and not the Swamp Camp, Cor Angar will still send you because by this point, you have earned his trust, and as a valued member of the New Camp, you’re the ideal go-between.
If you joined the Old Camp, then Diego will send you to speak to the New Camp, and he’ll tell you directly to go and speak to Saturas to recruit the water mages.
So, regardless of which camp you joined, these events will still play out, only a little differently. This all happens at the start of Chapter 3.
Getting past Saturas’ guards
Here’s where things get a little trickier. If you’re a member of the New Camp, you’ll be able to politely tell the guards you have a delivery for Saturas, which you do, and they’ll move aside.
If you’re a member of the Old or Swamp Camp, the guards will immediately draw their weapons and demand that you stop. In this instance, simply tell them the truth, that you’re there on behalf of Cor Angar or Diego, and you’re trying to help Saturas with his escape plan.
This will cause the guards to be less hostile, and you’ll gain entry.
Meeting Saturas

Once you finally meet Saturas, you’ll start building a coalition of allies from all three camps who are committed to bringing down the barrier and escaping the colony.
Saturas will send you on more quests to find the Focus Stones and will eventually send you on a diplomatic mission to recruit the fire mages at the Old Camp, who have been the bitter rivals of water mages for years.
When the Hero arrives, he finds that Gomez is threatened by the escape plan as it effectively strips him of power. What’s worse, the Old Mine has collapsed, and Gomez orders his men to attack the New Camp and seize control of their mine.
This puts the escape plan at risk, so the fire mages protest to try to protect the plan, and Gomez responds by killing most of them. The Hero is branded a traitor, and the New Camp becomes his new home. However, various allies from Old Camp defect, sick of Gomez and taking a chance on the escape plan.
The Swamp Camp also splits into two after they learn their religion was a lie. Some fall into denial and go on an ill-fated mission to the Sleeper’s Temple, while Cor Angar and the rest join the New Camp, committing to the escape plan.
Saturas’ fate and endgame decisions
Saturas will be devastated by the loss of the fire mages, but the escape plan will continue, despite the war with the remaining Old Camp loyalists.
Towards the end of the game, the necromancer Xardas will essentially force the player to betray Saturas by destroying his precious ore mound. Just do it, as you’ll need to for the story to progress and for the barrier to be finally brought down.
However, this will earn the enmity of the water mages, who’ll attack the player on sight. The good news is you’ll be reaching the final point of no return soon, so it doesn’t really matter if the mages are mad.
Saturas will survive the events of Gothic, but hilariously, he’ll still be angry, even though the plan worked and he gained his freedom. In Gothic 2, Saturas is still resentful of the Hero and doesn’t trust him based on the betrayal. The good news is, by the end of Gothic 3, Saturas has softened and he and the Hero make peace.
