Your villagers will require a steady source of food so they won’t die of starvation, and that is where setting up farms comes in handy. Farming is an integral aspect in Foundation, without which your economy can collapse. Since you can start farming quite early in the game, you need to learn how farming works and how to better implement it. This guide will cover everything there is to know about farming in Foundation.

How To Start A Farm In Foundation

Besides picking berries for food, you can start growing crops to feed your growing population. The earliest crop you can get is Wheat, and you can set up a wheat farm once 15 Serfs have settled into your village.

To start the process of building a wheat farm, all you need to do is find a spot within your territory and assign your workers to build there. After that, you also need to designate some area to grow wheat crops, so select the Paint Crop Field option from the info panel and select the designated area. Assign some workers to work on the farm and you are good to go.

    Livestock Farms

Later on, you can also unlock farms for livestock. The Sheep Farm and Dairy Farm are the two other farms to construct in your settlement. The same process as having a Wheat Farm applies here, where you need a designated area to set up the farmhouse as well as segregate land to keep cows and sheep.

Besides the farm types above, you can also start other miscellaneous farms after unlocking the Monastery. Along with the Monastery, you will require the Vineyard to grow wine grapes and an Apiary for cultivating bees and farming honey.

Lastly, you would need a Hops Farm to grow Hops, which in turn can be converted to beer and used in your Tavern. But this could have a negative impact on your settlement, so make sure that you place this particular farm as far away from the main village as possible.

    Other Building Requirements

Now that you have the raw produce from your farms, you will require the respective buildings to turn the raw materials into goods. Below are all the different structures and requirements for each farm type.

    • Windmill – Converts wheat from the Wheat Farm into Flour.
    • Bakery – Converts Flour into Bread.
    • Cheese Maker – Converts Milk into Cheese.
    • Weaver’s Hut – Converts Wool into Cloth.
    • Tailor’s Workshop – Converts Cloth into Common Clothes.
    • Brewery – Converts Hops into Beer.
    • Candlemaker – Converts BeesWax into Candles.
    • Winery – Converts Grapes into Wine.

Most of the finished items can be sold as produce at the marketplace, and some of them like Candles and Wine can be considered as luxury items to be sold at specific stalls. Beer and Cheese can be utilized by the Tavern or sold for profit at the marketplace. If you are looking for ways to grow your population in Foundation, we have an in-depth guide covering it.
