Deltarune Chapter 4: Gerson’s Mercy Stars Explained

During the Hammer of Justice boss fight in chapter 4 of Deltarune, you can engage in a Mercy system to see Gerson’s extra attack. Some attacks can raise the Gerson’s Mercy bar, and some will have no influence on it. Filling up Gerson’s Mercy bar will trigger a special attack at the end. Failing it will repeat the same attack over again. Here is a guide to Gerson’s Mercy Stars Explained Deltarune Chapter 4.

    Gerson’s Mercy System

During the battle, you will see golden stars appear over Gerson’s head. You will have at least 5 to 6 stars over his head, each star adds 1% to Gerson’s Mercy bar. Our goal is to set the Mercy bar at 84% to trigger the extra attack at the end of the battle.

Here is how you fill up Gerson’s Mercy bar in Chapter 4:

    • Common Attack: You can attack Gerson with the Magic Axe, which will fill up 4% of Gerson’s Mercy bar. You don’t have to be precise with your strike; either way, you will get 4% Mercy.
    • Rude Buster: If you fail to bounce back the Rude Buster, it will fill up 6% of the Gerson’s Mercy bar. Successfully deflecting the Rude Buster back at Gerson will raise the Mercy bar by 8%.
    • OKHeal: Healing Susie will fill up the Gerson’s Mercy bar by 9%.
    • Fifth-to-Last attack – Surviving the onslaught of arrow projectiles from all corners will raise 30% of Gerson’s Mercy bar. This attack comes after Gerson says, “…And soon, an ocean of ink shall wash across the pages”.
    • Fourth-to-Last attack – The follow-up attack after Fifth-to-Last attack will also have an arrow coming at your heart at all angles, surviving this attack will fill up 24% of the Gerson’s Mercy bar.
    • Third-to-Last attack –  The Third-to-Last attack also has a number of arrow projectiles, all around the screen, slowing moving at your heart from all angles. Survive this attack to earn 24% of the Gerson’s Mercy bar.
    • Second-to-Last attack–  Here, you have to defend against rushing arrow projectiles with turtle shells. Surviving this attack will fill up 20% of Gerson’s Mercy bar.

    What Doesn’t Work

    • Eating food items will not influence the Mercy bar; instead, Gerson will steal the food off Susie’s hand.
    • If you decide to defend, it will not impact the Mercy bar.
    • Parrying Gerson’s attack will not fill up his Mercy bar.

    Fail:

If you didn’t get Gerson’s Magic bar above 84%, you will see Gerson triggering the Second-to-Last attack. The attack here is a mix of the arrow projectiles with small turtle shells. Failing the Mercy bar will have Gerson following two Second-to-Last attacks instead of one.

    Success:

Gerson will begin his final attack after Susie says, “…Yep, now shut up and give me that axe!”. Here, Gerson will spawn four medium-sized turtles that you have to deflect in the middle. Which will then follow up with a barrage of hammer strikes from all angles.

Note: There is no time attached to Gerson’s attack. If you do manage to fill up Gerson’s Mercy bar quicker, you will see him executing his final attack.
