Black Myth Wukong has its fair share of NPC quests and hidden areas to unlock, and most of them are self-contained within a specific chapter. However, there is one quest line related to an NPC that spans across chapters; rewards you with a powerful spell, and unlocks a trophy/achievement as well. In this guide, we have put up all the details on how to complete the Horse Guai Quest and unlock the Dark Thunder Spell in Black Myth Wukong.
Black Myth Wukong Horse Guai Quest: How To Start
The Black Myth Wukong Horse Guai Quest kicks off by coming across the NPC for the first time in Chapter 1 in the Bamboo Grove area.
- Start from the Back Hills Keeper’s Shrine in Bamboo Grove.
- Go down the stairs and follow the path till you enter a cave.
- On the right, you will come across the Horse Guai.
- Approach him and interact; be sure to exhaust all his dialog. His last line will be ‘Now I’m pressed for time. Fare well thee, then’.
Black Myth Wukong Horse Guai Quest: How To Complete
Horse Guai Location Chapter 2:
The next area that you will come across the Horse Guai is the Sandgate Village in Chapter 2.
- Start from the Village Entrance Keeper’s Shrine in Sandgate Village.
- Turn back to cross the bridge and take a right.
- Enter the gate straight ahead.
- Approach the open temple to find the Horse Guai; and interact with him to exhaust all his dialog.
- His last line will be ‘We’ll meet again if fate wills it’.
Horse Guai Location Chapter 3:
You will then come across the Horse Guai in the New Thunderclap Temple area in Chapter 3.
- Start from the Temple Entrance Keeper’s Shrine.
- Cross the temple area, and keep left after taking the first set of stairs.
- As soon as you see the steps descending down on the left, take those to enter the temple.
- Take the stairs to the very top and proceed to the left. You will come across the Horse Guai leaning against one of the pillars.
- As always, ensure that you speak with him multiple times to exhaust all dialog.
- His last line will be ‘Say, my friend, why don’t you stay here and tread this path with me?’
Horse Guai Location Chapter 4:
The area for the next interaction with the Horse Guai is the Webbed Hollow in Chapter 4; this is probably the most convoluted path among all previous ones to reach the Horse Guai.
- Start from the Middle Hollow Keeper’s Shrine.
- Jump down into the area with all the cocoons scattered around.
- Proceed straight ahead, jump down, and cross the ground towards the opening with a flame on each side of the entrance.
- Keep following the path as it winds through the cavern till you spot a large cocoon with some noises coming from it.
- Hit it once and you will see that it was actually the Horse Guai trapped inside!
- Get ready for a small cutscene, and interact with the Horse Guai.
- The last line of the dialog will be ‘Now, take great care.’
Destroyed Cart: Chapter 5
The next location will not have the Horse Guai, but a Destroyed Horse Cart – in the Furnace Valley region of Chapter 5.
- Start from the Valley Entrance Keeper’s Shrine.
- Turn left and follow the winding path till you reach the bottom with pools of lava.
- Take a right and run straight ahead to see the Destroyed Horse Cart lying in the distance.
How To Unlock The Dark Thunder Spell In Black Myth Wukong
After interacting with the Horse Guai across chapters 1-5; proceed to defeat the Keeper of Flaming Mountains. This is an unmissable boss fight related to the main story. Keep in mind that killing this boss without going through the above steps will mean that the quest cannot be completed.
Go back to the Destroyed Cart in Chapter 5 – if you came across this and interacted with it; earlier you would not have been able to detach the whip completely from the cart. However, after defeating the boss; you will get a different interaction sign saying ‘Pull Forcefully’. Proceed to do exactly that and the Dark Thunder spell will be unlocked!
The Dark Thunder spell transforms you into a Horse Guai, making you immune to Thunder Damage, and inflicting Thunder Bane on the enemy.
And that completes the Horse Guai Quest and the Dark Thunder unlock in Black Myth Wukong. If you are also looking to close other NPC questlines, check out our guides on the Drunken Boar and Man-In-Stone quests.
