The Gothic 1 remake can be a tough and uncompromising game, so anything you can do to make your life easier should be taken advantage of when it’s available. The Broken Tower is a location that hides some nice loot that’ll help you survive your time in the colony, but getting through the locked door can be challenging.
While there’s quite a bit of useful loot in the Broken Tower, the main draw is a legendary ring that grants +10 blunt, +10 edge, and +10 incision defense, making your character much tougher and will serve you well until endgame. But before you can get past the door, you’ll need to figure out how to open it.
Finding the Broken Tower
The Broken Tower is located beyond the Orc’s territory and east of the New Camp across a bridge. In all honesty, if you’ve been to the New Camp, you’ll struggle to miss it.
But if you haven’t, complete the quest Out of Sight so that Mordrag escorts you safely to the New Camp, then you just need to head towards the Tower once you spot it in the distance.

Lockpicking the Broken Tower Door
As it did in the original, lockpicking sucks in the Gothic Remake, but it can be a safe, if not irritating, way of getting into the Broken Tower early, if you’re a low-level character without much combat ability.
While it’s easier to just kill the bandits for those who are tough enough and have the key to unlock the door that way, it’ll take some time before you’re powerful enough to kill bandits, so lock-picking the door is safer if you’re a new player.
If you’re going to go through the long-winded lockpicking process, follow these steps:
| Step | Instruction |
|---|---|
| 1 | Move the 3rd Plate to the left five times. |
| 2 | Move the 4th Plate to the right six times. |
| 3 | Move the 2nd Plate to the left once. |
| 4 | Move the 5th Plate to the right once. |
| 5 | Move the 2nd Plate to the left once. |

| 7 | Move the 1st Plate to the right six times. |
| 8 | Move the 6th Plate to the right two times. |
| 9 | Move the 2nd Plate to the left three times. |
| 10 | Move the 4th Plate to the right five times. |
| 11 | Move the 5th Plate to the right three times. |
| 12 | Move the 1st Plate to the right five times. |
| 13 | Move the 6th Plate to the right three times. |
| 14 | Move the 2nd Plate to the left six times. |
| 15 | Move the 1st Plate to the right three times. |
| 16 | Move the 4th Plate to the right three times. |
| 17 | Move the 5th Plate to the right three times. |

Killing the bandits
You can find a key to the Broken Tower door, but it’s guarded by two bandits and is located in a chest in their camp. You can find this camp by going behind the Broken Tower by climbing the wall on the left and following the path around. They’re easy to spot, especially at night when you can see the fire blazing.
If they spot you, they’ll engage you in dialogue and try to extort you. Things will usually turn violent, so if you decide to take this path, make sure you’re capable of winning a fight against two bandits. They’re not especially tough, but a low-level character will struggle to take them down.
If you’re quite proficient at combat, you’ll not struggle with them. You can also sneak up on them and hit them with arrows before any dialogue occurs. We were able to kill one of them this way, and that made killing the second bandit much easier.
Once these two chumps are dead, raid their chest and take the Broken Tower Key, Lockpick, x4 Beers, x4 Ham, and a Torch. Loot the corpses while you’re at it – their stuff is no longer any use to them.
Now return to the Old Tower, open the door, and enjoy the spoils. Especially that ring, which will make you far less likely to die in combat from now on.
