Square Enix Signals Change In Strategy To Multi-Platform AAA Games

Square Enix, in a strategy plan document released today titled ‘Square Enix Reboots, and Awakens’ , signalled a shift in strategy towards ‘aggressively pursuing a multi-platform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, Playstation, Xbox and PCs’. This is with the intent to ‘build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalog titles’.

The developer also looks to be exploring the same strategy for IOS and Android games by having a PC launch for these as well – which will predictably include quite a few live-service games with in-game purchases, as it seeks to ‘maximize acquisition of new users when launching a title and that of recurring users after starting management of game operation’.

In both cases, the developer is clearly eyeing the PC market which in its own report is ‘a growth market’.

The other area of focus for the publisher also looks to be better co-ordination and integration across various business divisions across countries and have a ‘cross-media strategy capable of approaching new markets’

Square Enix looks to have marked out Final Fantasy, Nier Automata, Octopath Traveller II, Life Is Strange for special focus as it looks to go back into its catalog for remakes. This comes as no surprise looking at how the first and second instalments of the Final Fantasy Remake + Rebirth were received as critical and commercial successes on Playstation.
