In my restless dreams, I see the game Silent Hill on Steam. Blooper has done the impossible as they managed to pull out a good Silent Hill game. The game has done an impressive job of raising the graphics bar at the same time, it has added plenty of new puzzles into the game. If you have played the OG Silent Hill 2, you are probably aware of the Chained Box, well you would be glad to know the puzzle has made a comeback to the doors of the remake. Here’s a guide to solving the Chained Box puzzle in Silent Hill 2 Remake.
How To Solve Chained Box Puzzle In Silent Hill 2 Remake
To open the chained box on the second floor of the Brookhaven Hospital, we will have to open three different types of locks:
- A Combination Cylinder Lock Code
- A Keypad Code
- And a special Key titled Lapis Eye Key.
You must unlock all three of these locks to open the box until then it stays shut. While the puzzle can get confusing we have made sure to break it all down into simple steps.
Obtaining Cylinder Combination For The Chained Box Puzzle
The short answer is 1622 for the combination code. To figure it out, you will need to start from the hanging clock on the second floor of Brookhaven Hospital.
First Number: 2
- Head to M1 directly below the Men’s Locker Room, east of the second floor map.
- Interact with the clock, the hand on the clock will stop at 2. That’s our first clue to the puzzle, the number 2.
While it may feel like it is the first number in the chained box puzzle, it is a major part of another puzzle that we will find it in the second number.
Second Number: 1
Here we have to enter the M2 room, but when you look at the map, M2 is sealed off.
- Head to M3 instead and interact with the breakable wall left of the room. Destroying the wall will allow us to enter M2.
- Look to your left, and pick up the torn-off paper on the ground. The paper will read:
“1 year they’ve been watching me, so many pills, they fed me, when a loud hour comes, I tremble every time the light falls.“
- Here we focus on the first line, “1 Year they’ve been watching me”, We have the number 1 here.
Third Number: 6
The note that we picked up has all the answers, we will find the third number to the puzzle from the cryptic lines. Now that we know 1 to be the first, we need to focus on the second part of the line ‘So many pills, they fed me.‘
- In the same room M2, where you picked up the paper, look to your right, interact with the dirty sink.
- Here you will find 6 pills in the sink. The third number is 6.
Fourth Number: 2
Here we focus on the last part of the line on the paper “I tremble every time the light falls.“
- Within the same M2 room, interact with the hole next to the broken wall we used earlier.
- From the hole, you can see the ceiling light in the other room. Underneath the hole, the message reads “Watch it go dark”.
- Look at the amount of times the light flickers. it will flicker only twice. The last number of the puzzle here is 2.
Solution Of The Combination Puzzle
So while we have got four nos, the sequence in which we have to arrange them is the sequence they come in the 1 line we found on the torn-off paper:
The First code: 1 – (1 year they’ve been watching me.)
The Second Code: 6 – (so many pills, they fed me)
The Third Code: 2 – (when a loud hour comes) [The very first number we received from the clock when the loud alarm rang off when the hand reached 2.]
The Fourth Code: 2 – (I tremble every time the light falls.)
The final code is 1622 to solve the combination cylinder lock.
Obtaining Lapis Eye Key For The Chained Box Puzzle
To obtain the Lapis Eye Key, we will need to break a mannequin with a hammer titled Instrument of Force and then jam a needle or Key of Bliss to pull the Lapis Eye Key out of the mannequin’s eye.
Route To Find The Key of Bliss
- Head to the first floor of Brookhaven Hospital, here make your way to the Medical Records Room, you can get into the room by taking the route through the Cafeteria.
- Once you are in the Medical Records Room, you will see the path on the south, and the door to the storage is blocked.
- Here you must head through the broken wall across the elevator to enter the room. Look at the north of the room, you will find the Key of Bliss in a hole.
Route To Find The Instrument Of Force
- Now change your direction to Brookhaven Hospital 3rd floor, here make your way to Exam Room 4, left of the X-ray Room.
- A creepy sight, as you will see a mannequin sitting in a wheelchair with his face covered with his hands. on the left of the mannequin, you will see a rolling tray with a Hammer or Instrument of Force lying on it.
Pick it up, and then use the Instrument of Force on the mannequin on the right. Then use the last item we picked up, the Key of Bliss to pull the Lapis Eye Key out of the mannequin. Two out, one more to go.
Keypad Code Location For The Chained Box Puzzle
First, we have to obtain the Director’s Room key, and turn the generator to activate the machine that helps us get the code from a ‘Hanging Stretcher’ .
Route To Find The Director’s Key
- We must head to the Director’s Room on the Second Floor of Brookhaven Hospital. But it is not as easy as it looks, we will need to get a special key to unlock the Director’s Room.
- To find the key, we will need to retrieve it from the Observation Room located in the top right corner of the second floor.
- However, all paths to the Observation Room are blocked off, except for a vent (The vent has a torn white sheet coming out of it) on the left of the Observation Room. James can’t jump that high so we will need some help.
- Here head to the Laundry Room, just directly above the Director’s Room on the map. Next to the steel bed, you will find a moveable laundry cart. Grab the cart and move it to the right, push it through the doorway, here align it with the vent on the right of the L3 room on the map.
- Now climb on the cart to go through the vent, finally, we are in the L3 room left of the Observation room. Once you drop off, you will find a nurse waiting for you on your right. Take care of the nurse and take the doorway on the right.
- Here you will find a TV on the ground, in front of it you will find the key to the Director’s Room.
Heading To Treatment Stretcher
- Open the Director’s Room with the key we picked up earlier. You will find a ladder reaching to the upper floor behind the desk. Take the ladder, to reach the floor above titled Treatment Stretcher.
- On your left you will see a machine, here we will find the code for the keypad, but when you interact with the terminal next to the bed, nothing happens. We have to turn on the power to get it working.
Find The Generator
- Follow the wire from the terminal to find the power source. Eventually, you will reach a dead end, as the wire will go through the chained window, here get to the room right next to the window by taking the doorway on the right.
- Here you will find a small vent or window with torn white cloths, crawl through the vent to get to the other side. Turn left, break the wall, and we are in the generator room! You will find the generator on your left on the ground, next to the locked door.
- Interact with the generator to turn the machine, then crawl through a narrow space on the right side of the wall, just across the generator. You will end up in a bathroom with sinks, just take the door on the left to get out.
Then turn right, and you will be back in the room with the machine. Now with the power back on, you can interact with the machine to turn it on. The code we will see on the hanging stretcher is 9659.
Opening The Chained Box In Silent Hill Remake
That’s it, now we can open up the box to continue our journey to find Mary.

- The Key for the Lock in the middle: Insert the Lapis Eye Key.
