If you decide to tame a giant bison in the Ragnarok expansion for ARK: Survival Ascended, then you must take your time and prepare for the worst. Entrapping the giant bison is the safest way to tame these creatures without breaking your spine. Here in this guide, we will show you the way to tame a giant bison and its list of abilities and more.
Taming The Giant Bison In ARK: Survival Ascended

Location: Plains and Grasslands
Domestication: Tameable/ Rideable/ and Breedable
Bisons will always be in a herd; you must separate the bison that you are looking to tame from its group. You will never spot a single bison in the wild. Here is how you go about doing it:
- Find the bison herd in the Grassland area. Once you have found the herd, look for the one that you want to tame. The next step is to kill all the bison, leaving out the chosen one.
- You can’t just open fire; that’s a quick way to die. We recommend you build a long tower, basically one or two pillars holding a platform on the top. This creates a vantage point to rain down bullets from the top at the bison herd.
- Once you start shooting at a bison, the rest of them will charge towards you. Since you are at a vantage point, they will not be able to reach you, so you can easily kill the rest of the bison with guns from the top. It will be like shooting fish in a barrel.
Setting up the Trap:
Once the field is clear of most bison, we can set up the trap to get the chosen one.
- Here, just build two door frames next to each other, and the other two on its opposite side. Make sure to have enough space between the door frames, so the bison can easily get in. Fill the door frame with doors, and set up a bear trap in the middle.
- Now lure the bison between the doorframe, so it will get stuck on the bear trap. Quickly block out the left and right sides of the door frames to trap the animal in the room.
- The next move is to climb or fly to the top of the wall and start shooting at the bison with the Tranquilizer Darts. You can knock out the bison after a few shots.
Walk over to the bison, and it will show the sign Unconscious. Now you just have to transfer food from your storage to the bison’s inventory to tame it. Once you have put food in its inventory, you will see the Taming bar underneath the Unconscious bar. Showing the sign of taming in progress.
Once it is tamed, it will wake up, and you will get a prompt about naming your bison. And that’s it, now you have successfully tamed a bison in the game.
Bison Abilities:

It’s important to note that the gender of the bison will influence its list of abilities.
Left-Mouse Click: Perform a standard attack with a bison. Here, the bison will swing its head.
Right Mouse Click: Perform a special move with the bison. Bison here will perform a head butt.
Heads Up and Heads Down: You can press Z to switch between Heads Up and Heads Down; you can see it at the bottom of the screen.
- Heads Down- If the bison’s head is down, then you click on the Right Mouse button will make the bison toss any animal with its horn.
- Heads up will lead to a more of a leap headbutt charge attack. It deals a good amount of damage and inflicts stun.
Note: Both Heads Up and Heads Down can benefit from a sprint before pulling the attack move.
